Sunrisers Hyderabad’s playoff dreams crushed as Daniel Vettori blames tricky Hyderabad surfaces

Daniel Vettori blamed pitch conditions and a lack of complete performances for SRH’s early IPL 2025 exit after their match against Delhi Capitals was washed out.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2025 campaign came to a disappointing halt after their match against Delhi Capitals was abandoned due to rain, leaving them stuck with just three wins from 11 games. With this, SRH is officially out of the playoff race. Head coach Daniel Vettori attributed the team’s poor season to unexpectedly challenging home conditions and inconsistent performances.

Home conditions didn’t match expectations, says Vettori

In the post-match press conference, Vettori emphasized that Hyderabad’s pitches did not behave the way the team had anticipated. “We are about assessing conditions, and this year, the conditions weren’t as we expected. These surfaces have been tricky, especially for batters,” he stated.

While the 2024 season witnessed seven 200+ innings in 12 attempts at Hyderabad, only four of 11 innings crossed that mark this year, indicating a significant drop in high scores. Vettori said that while two pitches were batting-friendly, the remaining were more suitable for pace bowlers, especially with the new ball.

Fast bowlers flourished, spinners took a backseat

Vettori noted that the surfaces offered more help to fast bowlers, especially early in the innings. “The new ball was a bit sticky, not easy to hit. The IPL has some of the best new-ball bowlers, and they took full advantage of the conditions,” he said.

Cummins leads the way, Shami dropped over form and pitch preference

Despite the team’s failures, captain Pat Cummins continued to deliver with the ball. Against DC, he took 3/19 and dismissed Karun Nair on the very first delivery. Vettori highlighted Cummins’ flexibility and praised his leadership.

Meanwhile, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami was dropped, having managed just six wickets in nine matches with an economy over 11. “It’s been a tough season for Shami. But on these pitches, we had to go with what suited us best,” Vettori explained.

Missed opportunity due to rain adds to SRH’s woes

SRH had a golden chance to add two points after reducing DC to 133/7, thanks to strong spells from Cummins and others. However, persistent rain washed out the chase. “It’s frustrating. This looked like our most complete performance, but rain denied us the finish,” lamented Vettori.

Inconsistency the biggest letdown

Vettori admitted that lack of consistency haunted the team throughout the season. “We started with high hopes but just couldn’t put full performances together,” he said, summarizing a season that began with promise but fizzled out due to unpredictability and underwhelming execution.

With just three wins in 11 matches, SRH now sits at the eighth spot on the table, while DC moves closer to a playoff berth with 13 points from 11 games.

Guwahati weather

The much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 encounter between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) has hit a weather hurdle. Scheduled to take place at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, the toss for Match 13 has been officially delayed due to persistent rain in the city.

Rain intensifies at Barsapara Stadium

The Guwahati weather has taken a turn for the worse as heavy drizzle forced the groundstaff to keep the pitch and square under covers. While the rain had momentarily eased, allowing for a brief inspection, it returned shortly after, frustrating both fans and players. According to media reports, the probability of rain during match hours has surged to nearly 50%, a significant increase from earlier forecasts.

Cut-off time and over reductions

As the clock ticks, the pressure on the match officials increases. Overs were scheduled to start being reduced from 8:40 PM IST. For those hoping for at least a shortened game, the cut-off time for a minimum five-over-a-side contest has been established at 10:56 PM IST. The city remains under a weather alert, with cloud cover expected to be a major factor throughout the evening.

High-stakes encounter on hold

Rajasthan Royals enter this game with a perfect record, having won their first two matches of the season. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, are looking to bounce back after a mixed start. A key highlight of this match is the potential battle between 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and the experienced Jasprit Bumrah.

Historically, the two teams share a fierce rivalry, with Mumbai holding a slight edge with 16 wins compared to Rajasthan’s 14 in their 31 previous meetings.
