Karnataka CM change: BJP asks Congress chief Kharge if he isn’t party high command over his comment

Published

on

In a sharp jab at Mallikarjun Kharge, the BJP on Monday asked the Congress president if he is not the party high command after he said the decision regarding the change of Karnataka Chief Minister lies with the high command.

Karnataka’s Leader of Opposition, R. Ashoka, branded him an “accidental” All India Congress Committee (AICC) chief, questioning who truly holds the reins of the party. “If Kharge isn’t the high command, then who is?” Ashoka asked.

The barb followed Kharge’s remarks on Monday, 30 June 2025, when he deflected questions about a potential change in Karnataka’s Chief Minister, stating that such decisions rest solely with the party’s high command.

He urged against stirring unnecessary controversy, speaking to journalists in Bengaluru. “These matters are for the high command to decide. No one here can speculate on their thinking. The high command has the authority to act, and we shouldn’t create problems needlessly,” Kharge said.

His comments came amid growing murmurs among Karnataka Congress leaders about a possible leadership shuffle, with some suggesting a change in the Chief Minister’s post could occur by October.

Taking to X, Ashoka didn’t hold back, likening Kharge to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, whom he called another “accidental” leader—someone with the title but not the authority.

“Now we have Mallikarjun Kharge, the accidental AICC president, openly admitting he’s in the dark about the high command’s plans,” Ashoka posted.

He went on to question whether Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, or an “invisible committee” tied to the Gandhi family is calling the shots.

“In Congress, the president is a figurehead, while decisions are made behind closed doors at 10 Janpath,” he alleged, accusing Kharge of leading a “masterclass in graceful surrender” to the Gandhi family’s influence.

Ashoka’s post concluded with a stinging remark: “Same script, new actor—still directed by the Gandhis.”

Congress has yet to respond to the allegations. The speculation over leadership changes in Karnataka stems from 2023, when Congress swept to power in the state.

At the time, rumours swirled that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy, D.K. Shivakumar, might split the term, each serving 2.5 years under a rotational arrangement.

The party has neither confirmed nor denied these claims. Siddaramaiah currently holds the top post, with Shivakumar as his deputy.

Adding fuel to the fire, Congress General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, responsible for Karnataka, arrived in Bengaluru to meet party legislators amid signs of discontent and talk of a leadership shake-up.

Commenting on Surjewala’s visit, Kharge said, “He’s here to gather feedback. Based on his report, we’ll decide the next steps.”

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the protest held outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence on Tuesday, accusing the Opposition of using students for political purposes amid the controversy over the NEET paper leak and other examination-related issues.

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several Congress leaders and workers staged the protest, raising concerns over the alleged NEET paper leak and other examination leaks. The demonstration also highlighted the alleged police action against students who participated in a march to Parliament organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) a day earlier.

The protest continued until the evening before police detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other leaders. They were later released the same night.

Pradhan says Parliament discussion was offered

Responding to the protest, Mr Pradhan alleged that the Congress was attempting to create disruption during the Monsoon Session of Parliament by turning students into political tools. He also claimed the demonstration violated security protocols and caused inconvenience to the public.

The minister referred to remarks made by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who had earlier said he spoke with Rahul Gandhi during the protest. According to Mr Singh, the Centre agreed to hold a discussion in Parliament on the paper leak issue, but Rahul Gandhi later added another demand after that assurance.

Mr Pradhan said the government had already expressed its willingness to hold a comprehensive discussion on the issue in Parliament, but alleged that the Congress preferred political confrontation over democratic debate.

Centre reiterates commitment to students

The Education Minister said the government remains committed to discussing the NEET controversy and addressing the concerns of students and young people through Parliament.

In a post on X, Mr Pradhan said students deserve certainty, solutions and accountability rather than political confrontation. He added that the Centre remains committed to delivering reforms and answering students’ concerns while working to strengthen the examination system.

Rahul Gandhi Detention

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday placed five demands before the Centre after he and several senior Congress leaders were detained during a protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence over the alleged NEET paper leak controversy.

The developments came after a day of political confrontation in the national capital, with the Opposition intensifying its protests over action taken against student demonstrators.

Rahul Gandhi demands resignations and reforms

While in detention, Rahul Gandhi released a video message outlining five demands for the government. He called for the resignations of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the controversy.

He also demanded action against police personnel accused of assaulting students during Monday’s protests and sought the withdrawal of cases registered against students.

Rahul Gandhi further asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apologise for the crackdown on protesters, sought a discussion on the issue in Parliament, and called for education and examination reforms at the earliest.

Congress leaders detained during protest

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several Congress leaders were detained by Delhi Police while staging a sit-in outside the Prime Minister’s residence at Lok Kalyan Marg. They were later released in the evening.

Rahul Gandhi was taken to Chhatrasal Stadium, while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was taken to Mandir Marg police station. Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi visited Priyanka Gandhi during her detention.

Questioning the country’s education system, Rahul Gandhi alleged that recurring examination paper leaks and rising education costs had created serious concerns for students and their families. He also said the Opposition wanted the matter to be discussed in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

Government accuses Congress of politicising the issue

Earlier in the day, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh met Rahul Gandhi at the protest site and held discussions for around 30 minutes.

Later, Singh alleged that Rahul Gandhi had changed his demands after the government agreed to discuss the NEET issue in Parliament, claiming the Congress leader subsequently insisted on the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Responding to the protest, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused Rahul Gandhi and the Congress of exploiting students for political purposes. He said the government had already expressed its willingness to hold a comprehensive discussion in Parliament and alleged that the Opposition was choosing political confrontation over democratic debate.

The political confrontation is expected to continue as the Opposition presses the government over the alleged examination paper leak issue.

Students protesting against alleged irregularities in major examinations, including question paper leaks and technical glitches, clashed with police in Delhi on Monday as they attempted to march towards Parliament. The demonstration drew sharp political reactions, with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticising the police action and accusing the Centre of suppressing peaceful protests.

Rahul Gandhi criticises police action

Reacting to the incident, Rahul Gandhi said the protesting students were demanding their rights and described the use of tear gas and baton charges as unacceptable.

In a video message, he said there was “absolutely nothing wrong” with the students’ protest and alleged that the government’s response was undemocratic. Gandhi also described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the “most anti-youth prime minister” while sharing a video that purportedly showed the police action against demonstrators.

According to Gandhi, young people have the right to an education system that is fair, functional and respectful towards students. He added that India, with a large youth population, should listen to their concerns rather than suppress their voices.

Protest linked to exam issues and CJP campaign

The protest was organised by supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement, which has gained significant attention on social media over issues related to the education system and unemployment.

The demonstration came shortly after activist Sonam Wangchuk’s 21-day hunger strike ended when he was taken to a hospital on Saturday.

CJP alleged on social media that police used tear gas against peaceful protesters and questioned the need for such action.

Police said permission had not been granted for the march, while internet services were suspended in parts of central Delhi during the protest.

Government holds talks with protesters

Rahul Gandhi also urged the Prime Minister to address the protesters’ demands, saying concerns over the education system were legitimate and should be taken seriously.

Meanwhile, CJP said two of its representatives met Union Minister JP Nadda and submitted a written memorandum outlining their demands after the government initiated contact for discussions.

Confirming the meeting, JP Nadda said the talks were held in a cordial atmosphere. He stated that the proposal for dialogue came from the protesters and that discussions had been underway since late morning.

According to the minister, the delegation submitted a written petition in the afternoon, following which he appealed to the protesters to end their sit-in and cooperate with authorities in restoring normalcy.
