[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee found herself on a collision course with the centre after a huge showdown on Sunday evening between the state police and officials of the CBI or Central Bureau of Investigation.

The CBI officials, who had come to question Kolkata police Chief Rajeev Kumar on two Ponzi schemes, were temporarily detained by the police.

The CBI officials who had approached the Supreme Court over the issue has been directed to bring the material on record to support its claim that Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar is trying to destroy evidence in the chit fund scams.

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said: “If Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar even remotely thinks of destroying evidence, bring the material before this Court. We will come down so heavily on him that he will regret.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the CBI’s plea seeking directions to Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to cooperate with the investigation in Saradha chit fund case. The court will hear the matter tomorrow.

The state’s BJP lawmaker Babul Supriyo had earlier tweeted: “President’s Rule should be imposed on West Bengal to control this ‘Rogue’ #TMchhi Govt under a corrupt CM Mamata Banerjee. This is a constitutional crisis ‘created’ by Mamata to shield her corrupt & tainted accomplices (sic)”.

On Sunday evening, Mamata Banerjee sat on a dharna after the CBI tried to quiz Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in connection with Saradha and Rose Valley Chit Fund scams.

Earlier on Sunday, Banerjee had arrived at Kumar’s house around 7 PM. Soon, top police officers, including all the divisional DCs, ADG, Law and Order, Anuj Sharma, DGP Virender rushed and conducted a high level meeting.

“Whatever happened today is worse than emergency. It was no less than a coup. CBI is harassing in gabbar style (a reference to iconic bandit in the movie, Sholay),” she said.

The Bengal CM alleged that NSA chief Ajit Doval was “giving instructions” to CBI and PM Modi to take action against TMC leaders and policemen.

“There are companies (chit fund) that are sponsored by PM Modi, Assam CM and BJP MP Babul Supriyo. Why they are roaming freely? Why haven’t they been arrested? I will stick to my stand that Kolkata police commissioner is one of best officers in the world. Modi doesn’t deserve to be a prime minister. Let them prove that Rajeev Kumar was involved in chit fund scam,” Mamata said.

Rajeev Kumar – who headed a Special Investigation Team probing the Saradha and Rose Valley Ponzi scams of 2013 – was asked to help the investigation after several documents allegedly went missing. He has received several summons for questioning.  This time, a section of media reported that he could be arrested for evading questioning and was “absconding”. The Kolkata Police said they would take action for the defamatory reports.

The Trinamool Congress chief further said that it was her duty to protect her officers. “CBI came to Rajeev Kumar’s house without a search warrant. How audacious it was? They are playing with the Constitution. I will not tolerate this,” she said.

The anti-BJP party is supporting the Mamata Banerjee-led government, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said that the entire opposition will stand together and “defeat the fascist forces”.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]While, CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury has slammed both Modi and Banerjee over the issue.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_raw_html]JTNDYmxvY2txdW90ZSUyMGNsYXNzJTNEJTIydHdpdHRlci10d2VldCUyMiUyMGRhdGEtbGFuZyUzRCUyMmVuJTIyJTNFJTNDcCUyMGxhbmclM0QlMjJlbiUyMiUyMGRpciUzRCUyMmx0ciUyMiUzRVRoaXMlMjBkcmFtYSUyMGluJTIwS29sa2F0YSUyMGJ5JTIwQkpQJTIwYW5kJTIwVE1DJTIwaXMlMjBub3QlMjBhJTIwZmlnaHQlMjBmb3IlMjBhbnklMjBwcmluY2lwbGUlMjBidXQlMjBvbmx5JTIwdG8lMjBzYXZlJTIwdGhlaXIlMjBjb3JydXB0JTIwYW5kJTIwaGlkZSUyMHRoZWlyJTIwY29ycnVwdGlvbi4lMjBDUEklMjhNJTI5JTIwaGFzJTIwZm91Z2h0JTIwYm90aCUyMHRoZXNlJTIwdW5kZW1vY3JhdGljJTJDJTIwY29ycnVwdCUyQyUyMGNvbW11bmFsJTIwYW5kJTIwZGljdGF0b3JpYWwlMjByZWdpbWVzJTIwaW4lMjB0aGUlMjBDZW50cmUlMjBhbmQlMjB0aGUlMjBzdGF0ZSUyMGFuZCUyMHdpbGwlMjBjb250aW51ZSUyMHRvJTIwZG8lMjBzby4lMjAlMjgyJTJGMiUyOSUyMCUzQ2ElMjBocmVmJTNEJTIyaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZ0LmNvJTJGbTJ2dkhNWXRFcCUyMiUzRWh0dHBzJTNBJTJGJTJGdC5jbyUyRm0ydnZITVl0RXAlM0MlMkZhJTNFJTNDJTJGcCUzRSUyNm1kYXNoJTNCJTIwU2l0YXJhbSUyMFllY2h1cnklMjAlMjglNDBTaXRhcmFtWWVjaHVyeSUyOSUyMCUzQ2ElMjBocmVmJTNEJTIyaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZ0d2l0dGVyLmNvbSUyRlNpdGFyYW1ZZWNodXJ5JTJGc3RhdHVzJTJGMTA5MjExNzE1NTM4MDkwODAzMiUzRnJlZl9zcmMlM0R0d3NyYyUyNTVFdGZ3JTIyJTNFRmVicnVhcnklMjAzJTJDJTIwMjAxOSUzQyUyRmElM0UlM0MlMkZibG9ja3F1b3RlJTNFJTBBJTNDc2NyaXB0JTIwYXN5bmMlMjBzcmMlM0QlMjJodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRnBsYXRmb3JtLnR3aXR0ZXIuY29tJTJGd2lkZ2V0cy5qcyUyMiUyMGNoYXJzZXQlM0QlMjJ1dGYtOCUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRnNjcmlwdCUzRSUwQQ==[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Shehzad Poonawalla steps down from BJP, says personal and financial pressures led to decision

Shehzad Poonawalla has resigned from the BJP, citing pressing financial and personal circumstances, and said he will move to the private sector.

Shehzad Poonawalla on Monday resigned from the BJP, citing what he described as pressing financial and personal circumstances.

The BJP’s national spokesperson said he had first submitted his resignation on July 30. However, the party did not accept it at the time and asked him to reconsider his decision.

Poonawalla has now reiterated his decision to step down as the BJP’s national spokesperson and relinquish his primary membership of the party.

In his resignation letter to BJP president Nitin Nabin, Poonawalla said that after “long and hard contemplation”, he had decided to seek relief from his organisational responsibilities and active primary membership.

He also referred to developments involving certain individuals in recent days, saying they had reinforced his earlier decision. He did not name anyone in his letter.

Shehzad Poonawalla thanks BJP leadership

Poonawalla said he was touched that the BJP had initially declined to accept his resignation and expressed gratitude towards the party leadership.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Nitin Nabin, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh for the platform and opportunities he received during his five years with the party.

Poonawalla said his decision to leave was not driven by any sense of hurt and described his sentiments towards the party leadership with “gratefulness, love, affection, and highest regard”.

He said that his decision was linked to pressing financial and personal circumstances and that he would move into the private sector.

At the same time, Poonawalla said he would continue to support Prime Minister Modi’s vision and work, as well as that of the BJP, wherever possible.

“I am only leaving the Vyavastha not the Vyakti or Vichar,” he said.

Shehzad Poonawalla’s political journey

A lawyer, Poonawalla began his political career with the Congress before later joining the BJP.

He came into prominence in 2017 after publicly questioning the Congress’s internal election process. He alleged that the process was rigged in favour of Rahul Gandhi for the post of party president.

Poonawalla subsequently left the Congress and joined the BJP, where he became one of the party’s prominent representatives in television debates.

On July 30, he had also changed his bio on X, removing the reference to himself as “BJP National Spokesperson” while retaining his description as a lifelong follower of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi skipped the 80th Independence Day celebrations at Delhi’s Red Fort for the second consecutive year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the Independence Day celebrations at the historic venue on Saturday.

The absence of the two senior Congress leaders comes amid strained relations between the ruling party and the Opposition, which further deteriorated during the Monsoon Session of Parliament that concluded on Thursday.

2024 seating controversy

Rahul Gandhi had attended the Independence Day celebrations in 2024 but his seating arrangement triggered a controversy. The Congress leader, who holds the status of a Cabinet minister as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was seated in the second-last row during the ceremony at the Red Fort.

The Opposition had criticised the seating arrangement, calling it an insult to the people. The Defence Ministry, which organised the event, said the arrangement had been modified to accommodate Olympians at the venue.

According to protocol, the Leader of the Opposition is seated in the front row during ceremonial events.

Opposition-ruling party tensions

Relations between the government and the Opposition remained tense during the Monsoon Session, which ended on Thursday.

The session saw repeated clashes between the two sides, with both the Opposition and the ruling party blaming each other for the low productivity of Parliament.

The session began on July 20, with students marching towards Parliament on the first day. Twelve bills were passed during the session, while detailed discussion took place on only one legislation, concerning paper leaks.

The Congress, along with the Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party, also boycotted the customary tea party hosted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla after the House was adjourned sine die.

A 52-year-old BJP leader who had been missing for two days was found dead in Assam’s Sribhumi district on Friday, with police alleging that he was murdered.

Bikash Dhar, a resident of Chagalmowa village under Bazaricherra police station, was found dead inside an abandoned house in the Yogicherra area near the Tripura border on Friday morning.

Dhar’s family had filed a missing complaint on August 12 after he left home following a phone call.

According to his son Madan Dhar, Bikash left around 1 pm after saying that he had to attend an emergency meeting. When he did not return and his phone was switched off, the family began searching for him and later approached the police.

Five arrested in murder case

Sribhumi Superintendent of Police Leena Doley said an investigation was launched after the missing complaint was received. The probe was conducted under the supervision of the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime).

Police said five people have been arrested in connection with the alleged murder. They were identified as Abdul Salam, Sifat Ali, Abdul Ahad, Saiful Ali and Badrul Haque.

According to the police, interrogation of Abdul Salam revealed that the accused had an enmity with Dhar. Police alleged that the group killed him and dumped his body near a water body.

Another person, identified as Sunam Miya, was named during the investigation and reportedly fled to Tripura on the night of the incident.

Police find injury and cut marks on body

Police said injury and cut marks were found on Dhar’s body, and a murder case has been registered.

During the recovery of the alleged weapon, police said accused Badrul Haque attempted to escape from custody. A police constable was injured during the incident.

Police said they fired at Haque’s leg to prevent him from escaping, resulting in a bullet wound.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Dhar’s death and the alleged involvement of the accused is underway.
