Hours after four men, who the police said had “confessed” to raping and murdering the 26-year-old veterinarian in Hyderabad last week, were gunned down in an “encounter”, the Cyberabad police chief said that “the law has done its duty”.
Cyberabad police chief VC Sajjanar told reporters that the accused had snatched their weapons and were shot dead in a cross fire.
“I can only say that law has done its duty,” he said while addressing the media at the site of the shooting, about 50 km from Hyderabad.
The four men, Mohammed Arif, Jollu Shiva, Jollu Naveen and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu, arrested a day after the crime, had been in police custody since Wednesday. Around 3 am today, they were taken to the scene of the crime where the charred body of the woman was found to reconstruct the sequence of events, the police said.
There were around 10 police personnel with the accused who began to hit the cops with sticks, stones and snatched their weapons forcing the police to fire in retaliation, Sajjanar said.
“We warned them and asked them to surrender but they continued to fire. Then we opened fire and they were killed. Two policemen were also injured and they have been shifted to a local hospital,” the senior officer said.
As praises continue to pour for the police, questions are also being raised about the early morning encounter. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said it will send a team led by a senior police officer to Telangana to investigate the matter.
“We will answer to whoever takes cognizance, the state government, the NHRC, and others who are concerned,” Sajjanar said.
The officer also requested critics that “when there are sensitive cases, don’t get after the officers. Let us investigate”.
The father of the woman veterinarian, who was among the first to react to the encounter, said, “It has been 10 days to the day my daughter died. I express my gratitude towards the police and government for this. My daughter’s soul must be at peace now.”
