Jaya Bachchan appeals for relief for film industry, accuses government of killing it

“One industry has been completely ignored by you, and previous governments have done the same. But today, you have taken it to the next level. You have overlooked the film and entertainment industry, using it only for your own purposes,” Bachchan said.

Samajwadi Party MP and veteran actor Jaya Bachchan on Tuesday urged Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to show “mercy” on the film industry and introduce measures to help it survive. Speaking during the General Discussion on the Union Budget 2025-26 in the Rajya Sabha, Bachchan accused the government of neglecting the film and entertainment sector, warning that its survival was at stake.

“One industry has been completely ignored by you, and previous governments have done the same. But today, you have taken it to the next level. You have overlooked the film and entertainment industry, using it only for your own purposes,” Bachchan said.

She highlighted the struggles faced by daily wage workers and the decline of single-screen theatres, attributing these challenges to rising costs and changing consumer behaviour. “Today, leaving aside GST, single-screen theatres are shutting down. People are not going to movie halls because everything has become so expensive. It seems like you want to kill this industry altogether. This is the only industry that connects the entire world to India,” she added.

Bachchan appealed for compassion and support for the audio-visual industry, alleging that cinema was being unfairly targeted. “I am speaking on behalf of my film industry and making a request to this House on behalf of the audio-visual industry: please spare them. Have some mercy. You are trying to kill this industry—please do not do this. Today, you have started targeting cinema as well,” she said.

She urged the Finance Minister to address the issue “very, very seriously,” emphasizing the challenges of sustaining the film industry. “I request the Finance Minister to consider this matter and introduce measures to help the industry survive,” Bachchan stated.

During the debate, other MPs also shared their perspectives on the budget. K. R. Suresh Reddy of the BRS appreciated the government’s move to provide income tax relief to individual taxpayers earning up to ₹12 lakh.

Meanwhile, Arun Singh of the BJP highlighted the significant increase in healthcare allocations, which have nearly tripled from around ₹37,000 crore under the Congress-led UPA government. Singh also praised the government’s decision to raise the Kisan Credit Card limit from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh, calling it a step toward empowering farmers.

Bachchan’s impassioned plea underscores the growing concerns within the film industry, which has been grappling with economic challenges, rising operational costs, and the impact of digital transformation. As the debate continues, stakeholders await concrete measures from the government to support one of India’s most culturally significant sectors.

In a shocking turn of events, renowned music composer Pritam Chakraborty has found himself at the center of a major controversy following the theft of Rs 40 lakhs from his office. The incident, which has garnered significant media attention, occurred on February 4. Pritam’s manager, Vinit Chheda, immediately lodged a formal complaint with the police after the theft came to light.

Reports indicate that the money was brought to Pritam’s office by a production house employee. This employee handed over the cash to manager Vinit Chheda, who stored it in a trolley bag. The funds were needed for Pritam to sign some important documents. After securing the money, Chheda left the office to go to Pritam’s residence. However, upon his return, he discovered that the trolley bag was empty.

Desperate to understand what had happened, Chheda inquired with colleagues, only to learn that Ashish Syal, the office boy, had left on the pretext of delivering the money to Pritam’s house. Sensing something was amiss, Chheda tried to contact Syal, but he found that the boy had switched off his mobile phone. Concerned about the unfolding situation, Chheda promptly informed Pritam, who agreed that immediate action was necessary.

Following their discussion, Chheda reported the matter to the Malad Police Station in Mumbai. The police have registered a case, and a special team has been assigned to locate the accused. The investigation is currently underway as authorities work to piece together the events leading to the theft and Syal’s escape.

The Diary of Manipur: Monalisa, viral girl from Maha Kumbh, gets a role in Sanoj Mishra’s directorial

Mishra stresses the importance of authenticity, stating, “Our focus is to nurture her innate talent, allowing her natural grace and innocence to shine through. We want her performance to be a genuine reflection of her spirit.”

From garland seller to Bollywood starlet: Indore’s Monalisa Bhosle’s remarkable rise. Monalisa, the captivating young woman who unexpectedly became an internet sensation selling garlands at the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, is trading flower petals for film sets. Her journey, a captivating blend of serendipity and determination, is set to become a cinematic reality. Director Sanoj Mishra, celebrated for his socially conscious films such as The Diary of West Bengal, has cast Bhosle in his highly anticipated upcoming movie, The Diary of Manipur.

Spotted amidst the vibrant chaos of the Kumbh Mela, Monalisa’s innocent beauty and captivating charm quickly captured the hearts of millions online. Her story, a testament to the power of social media, reached director Mishra, who was deeply moved by her resilience and spirit. He saw in her not just a pretty face, but a compelling narrative waiting to be told. Following a phone call to her father, a contract was swiftly signed in Maheshwar, officially marking Bhosle’s entry into the world of Bollywood.

Mishra’s choice is far from arbitrary. Bhosle’s role in The Diary of Manipur will draw upon the very essence of her own life. As Mishra eloquently explains, “Monalisa hails from a humble, nomadic family, making a living by selling garlands. This resonates deeply with her character in the film: the daughter of a retired Manipur army soldier, harbouring a similar unwavering ambition—to join the army herself. The film will delve into the struggles she faces, the obstacles she overcomes, and ultimately, her journey towards fulfilling her dreams.”

To prepare Bhosle for her big-screen debut, Mishra and his team will provide comprehensive acting training, meticulously designed to preserve her natural charm and unassuming demeanour. Mishra stresses the importance of authenticity, stating, “Our focus is to nurture her innate talent, allowing her natural grace and innocence to shine through. We want her performance to be a genuine reflection of her spirit.”

With a substantial budget of ₹20 crore, The Diary of Manipur is poised to be a significant cinematic undertaking, slated to begin filming in February. Mishra’s decision to cast Bhosle carries a profound message, challenging conventional industry norms and preconceived audience expectations.

He firmly asserts, “Success in this industry is not solely defined by physical attributes; acting prowess is paramount. Monalisa possesses the desire, and we will cultivate her skills. If Sunny Leone could redefine perceptions, then surely a girl from a nomadic community can prove that decency and simplicity can also illuminate Bollywood.”

Mishra’s casting choice also serves as a direct response to the pervasive nepotism within the industry. He champions the inclusion of fresh talent, stating emphatically, “My films aren’t about star power; the story itself is the star. Stories like Monalisa’s deserve a platform, and audiences are increasingly receptive to authentic narratives.” Bhosle’s story, therefore, is not just a personal triumph, but a symbol of hope and a challenge to the established order of Bollywood.
