Popularly known as The Tragedy Queen, Meena Kumari was a legendary actor in Hindi cinema. March 31 marks the death anniversary of the multifaceted actor.

Born as Mahjabeen Bano, Meena Kumari was left at the door of an orphanage by her parents who could not bear the burden of another daughter. Kumari is referred to as a historically incomparable actor in Hindi cinema. Her beauty, grace, voice, and acting prowess served her four Filmfare Awards.

In a career spanning more than 30 years, Meena Kumari appeared in about 92 films. Her notable works include Pakeezah, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Baiju Bawra, Mere Apne, Aarti, Foot Path, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Kaajal, and Dil Ek Mandir. For Baiju Bawra, Meena Kumari bagged Filmfare Best Actress Award in 1954.

Meena Kumari did multiple films with Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, and Pradeep Kumar. She worked with almost every A-listers of Hindi cinema during that time including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Guru Dutt, Shammi Kapoor, Balraj Sahni, Sunil Dutt, Karan Dewan, Kishore Kumar, Raaj Kumar, and Bharat Bhushan.

Apart from her professional life, Meena Kumari had a hush personal life that also remained a topic of discussion back then. She fell in love with her producer Kamal and their love lore began in 1951. Reportedly, Meena met with an accident and Kamal used to visit her every day in the hospital. Later in 1952, the couple tied the knot in an intimate wedding ceremony.

The Tragedy Queen’s last film was Paakeezah. As per reports, the makers could not film the song Roz Akeli Aaye, written by Gulzar, crooned by Lata Mangeshkar, as Meena fell seriously ill while shooting the film. On March 28, 1972, Meena Kumari got admitted to St Elizabeth’s Nursing Home and went into a coma two days later. She passed away due to liver cirrhosis on March 31, 1972. She was 38.
