Indian celebrities mark their international footprint with a visit to the Cannes Film Festival, this time in 2023, the trend is still intact. Bollywood stars Anushka Sharma and Mrunal Thakur are to debut on the red carpet after Sara Ali Khan and Esha Gupta did previously.

While Bollywood celebrities appear on the Cannes red carpet, Haryana’s dancing star Sapna Chaudhary of Bigg Boss 11 fame will be making her debut on the French Riviera this year.

Sapna Choudhary rose to fame after her participation in the Salman Khan-hosted reality show Bigg Boss 11 with contestants Hina Khan, Hiten Tejwani, and Vikas Gupta. She is the first regional celebrity to walk the red carpet at Cannes, making this year a particularly noteworthy one for India.

Chaudhary said she was grateful and really looked forward to walking the red carpet at Cannes. She remarked she would have the opportunity to represent India’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage. She said that she was very excited and wanted to be a source of inspiration for everyone.

Prior to this, Hina Khan, Sapna’s fellow Bigg Boss 11 contestant, debuted at Cannes in 2019. Actor Helly Shah made her debut at the ceremony in 2022. She went to the ceremony when her movie Kaya Palat unveiled its poster. Helly Shah is well known for her parts in the TV series Swarangini, Devanshi and Ishq Mera Sufiyana.

One of the most famous film festivals in the world, Cannes brings together directors, actors, producers, distributors, and reviewers from around the globe. This yearly festival is one of the major occasions in the world of cinema. It mixes opulent red carpet-appearances, movie screenings, networking, and award presentations.

The film festival opened yesterday with not-for-competition Johnny Depp-starrer Jeanne du Barry. Mired in the divorce controversy with former wife Amber Heard, Depp broke into tears when the audience gave him a standing ovation, heralding his out-cancelling his detractors.

Oscar 2024

The search for India’s official Oscars 2024 submission has already started. According to a report, films like Gadar 2, Balagam, The Kerala Story by Vivek Agnihotri, Zwigato by Kapil Sharma, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani by Karan Johar are among those being evaluated for India’s official entry to the Academy Awards.

According to a source, a 17-member committee led by director Girish Kasaravalli has been established and is now screening films in Chennai. This committee reportedly received over 22 submissions from all throughout India.

Some of the films that have been submitted to the Film Federation of India for Oscar consideration include Anant Mahadevan’s The Storyteller (Hindi), Music School (Hindi), Mrs Chatterjee vs. Norway (Hindi), 12th Fail (Hindi), Viduthalai Part 1 (Tamil), Ghoomer (Hindi), and Dasara (Telugu), as per reports.

Vaalvi (Marathi), Gadar 2 (Hindi), Ab Toh Sab Bhagwan Bharose (Hindi), and Baap Lyok (Marathi) could be added to the list. We have their application, but we’re awaiting payment, the insider continued.

India’s official Oscars 2024 participation will likely be decided upon and announced later this month. The screening began yesterday and will last a week because there is a sizable pool of films to be seen before they make a decision. Next week, a declaration about India’s official entry is anticipated, the source said.

Indian films won two Oscars earlier this year. At the 95th Academy Awards, the Naatu Naatu song from SS Rajamouli’s RRR won Best Original Song, and The Elephant Whisperers by Guneet Monga took home Best Documentary (Short Subject). Filmmakers are reportedly looking at a wide range of commercial, regional, as well as serious cinema from the country as a result of their new confidence as a result of this.

Last Film Show (Chhello Show), a Gujarati movie by Pan Nalin, was chosen as India’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards last year.

Alongside celebrities like Emily Blunt, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Janelle Monae, Zoe Saldana, Jennifer Connelly, Riz Ahmed, and Melissa McCarthy, Deepika Padukone presented at the Oscars in 2023.

Jaane Jaan social media review: Kareena Kapoor OTT debut is a mix of Drishyam and Kahaani

Sujoy Gosh relied too heavily on the strength of his actors, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Vijay Varma, and let them carry the entire movie on their shoulders without much concern for the plot.

Jaane Jaan

It is challenging to surpass the standard that Sujoy Ghosh set for himself with the Vidya Balan-starring film Kahaani. And it’s clear in the majority of his later ventures where he took on the director’s role. With Jaane Jaan, the trailer foretold great things and made things appear to be quite exciting, but the movie only just manages to live up to the anticipation or even approach the intrigue level it set out to produce.

Jaideep Ahlawat’s first dream in Jaane Jaan is unmistakably grim. On the top left of the screen, there is a brief warning that appears as soon as the movie starts, warning you that it contains references to drug use, suicide, and domestic violence.

This warning, together with the nightmare of Jaideep’s character, quickly paints a clear image of what you are getting into. This is a Sujoy Ghosh film, after all.

Halfway through Jaane Jaan, everyone was convinced that even the director knew this wasn’t one of his best pieces. However, it’s possible that he relied too heavily on the strength of his actors, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Vijay Varma, and let them carry the entire movie on their shoulders without much concern for the plot.

And these three give flawless performances, which are what keep Jaane Jaan from drowning. They give moviegoers with a rewarding experience when taken as a whole. Jaane Jaan would have been a fantastic viewing if I had to limit my attention to just watching them perform. However, the movie has a number of flaws that are difficult to overlook.

While people have few complaints about Ghosh’s commitment to his work as a director, Jaane Jaan clearly needs more pace, complexity, and nuance to hit you hard, which it never does, with the possible exception of one sequence concerning physical abuse.

Kareena Kapoor starrer Jaane Jaan is based on the best-selling Japanese novel The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino. An acclaimed book that has been translated into numerous languages and turned into films in South Korea, China, Japan, and even Tamil (‘Kolaigaran’).
