The auspicious day of Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated today. The day falls on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Bhadrapad every year. It is an annual Hindu celebration and celebrated with great zeal across the country.
According to the Hindu calendar, Lord Krishna was the eighth son of Vasudeva and Devaki, the sister of Mathura’s King Kansa. Apart from India, the festival is also celebrated in Malaysia, Canada, and Paris. Devotees of Lord Krishna observe a fast and statues of baby Krishna are washed with milk. They break their fast at midnisht and offer makhan mishri to Kanha. People decorate palna for Krishna with new clothes, make mukut with mor pankh, buy shankh, garlands, bansuri, anklet, gada, and so on.
In Hindu Shastra, the fast kept on Janmashtami is given the status of ‘Vratraj’. It is believed that observing this fast bears more fruit than keeping multiple fasts throughout the year.
