Uttar Pradesh chief minister has been campaigning hard for victory in municipal elections in his state, talking about the change he has brought about in the crime situation to provide a sense of security to women and citizens in general.
The civic elections are the first major test of his government – or so he has turned into, making a question of his prestige. But on the question of ‘honour’ of women, so close to the heart of his party – and issue on which he and his party have been making violent threats in the name of even mythical figures, his report card can at best be called ‘disappointing’.
Women’s safety was one of issues highlighted during and after his election. ‘Anti-Romeo squads’ were set up and the moral police took to task boys and girls – even friends and, in some instances, siblings – talking, walking or sitting together, not creating any kind of nuisance. A moral code was enforced: no intermingling, interaction between persons of opposite sex, or at least that’s how it worked on the ground.
After more than half a year of Aditynatah’s government, here is the look at status of crimes against women over a period of a little over a month and a half, according to reports filed by APN staffers spread across the state.
APN network reported 72 cases of rape since October 14, 2017, starting with the incident of suicide by a gangrape victim in Baghpat. The victim was a student. No action was taken on her complaint and the accused had been threatening to gang rape her again. Taking the matter to the CM yielded no results and she committed suicide in frustration and desperation.
The cases listed include some other istances of gang rape, rape-cum-murder, dismembering the victims body after raping and murdering her, and brutal assault on minors, including toddlers. There are couple of instances of rape by close relatives – by the brother or the father – a matter of shame under morals of any society.
There were 22 instances where the victim managed to get away or was saved from the rape attempt.
Cases of eve teasing reported – 25 in number – conceal the real number of instances under this head, for it includes complaints by students of girls’ colleges and schools about continued harassment and eve-teasing.
In some cases, girls stopped going to college due to the menace.
They also include instances where the victim tried to end her life due to continued harassment.
There were cases where the hoodlums indulging in eve-teasing turned violent and beat up girls/family members for resisting them.
Cases of violence, including murder, numbered 14. These include cases where missing girls were found murdered and their bodies thrown in fields.
There were 16 cases of abduction of girls in this period of a little over a month-and-a-half. There were cases where a girl was abducted forcefully before the eyes of their relatives.
Cases of dowry and marital disputes reported were 16. These include instances where the woman was suspected to have been killed by in-laws.
Attached is the entire list of cases, as reported by APN network, with dates and places of occurrence.
