Activities Planned Across Country To Promote Adventure Travel in Year of Adventure Tourism - 2018

With the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) announcing 2018 as the “The Year of Adventure Tourism”, the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) will spearhead various activities across the country to promote adventure travel to celebrate the year of adventure tourism.

ATOAI is aiming to have a series of events, roadshows in India and overseas, FAM trips for international adventure tour operators as well as travel media to mark the celebrations. “The goal is to double the adventure travel in the country in the next two years,” said Capt. Swadesh Kumar, President, ATOAI.

ATOAI has already given a wish list to MoT which includes the “India Adventure Summit” in April 2018:

1.India Adventure Summit in April 2018

2.ATTA- AdventureNext in Panchmarhi, Madhya Pradesh in December, 2018

3.Planning to bid for PATA Adventure Travel Mart and Conference in India for February 2019 in Assam

The association has adopted two trails; Stok Kangri and the ascent trail to Base Camp and Gangotri Temple and trail to Gaumukh, as a part of their contribution towards Himalayan sites for cleaning and maintaining.  ATOAI is also working towards increasing its membership across the country from the present strength of 450 to 2,000 by the end of 2018.

It has prepared a version II of the Safety Guidelines for adventure tourism which MoT has circulated across all the states. A meeting was held on December 27, 2017, where these guidelines were shared and discussed with the representatives of all Indian states. MoT has given them two weeks to come back with any changes or additions, after which the guidelines will be implemented across all Indian states.

States like Tamil Nadu, whose presence in the adventure tourism map of India, is comparatively low, are expected to witness a surge in adventure tourists due to increasing opportunities and harness the growth potential enabling themselves as adventure tourism destinations.

Most of the domestic adventure tourists in the north, east and north-east zone states spent around INR 20,000 to INR 30,000 per head per trip for adventure packages while those in the south zone and west zone states spent around INR 10,000 to INR 20,000 per person per trip for adventure packages. Foreign adventure tourists spent less than USD 4,000 per head per trip for adventure packages.

Meanwhile, the market for travel and tourism in India is forecasted to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of around 7.23 pc during 2016-2021, on account of increasing trend of medical, wellness and adventure tourism in the country and rising number of online bookings due to growing smartphone and internet penetration.

Wrestlers left to grapple with Delhi Police might, march fails, Jantar Mantar cleared

The Delhi Police on Sunday cleared the protest area occupied by protesting wrestlers in Jantar Mantar after detaining several wrestlers, including women, on their march to the new Parliament building which was being inaugurated at that time.

The wrestlers had called for a mahila samman mahapanchayat with support from farmers and khap panchayats from various states. With Delhi Police declaring the area around Parliament a no-go zone in view of the ceremonies there today, the wrestlers were not allowed to proceed on their march from Jantar Mantar.

The wrestlers, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, were detained at Jantar Mantar when the protesters tried to clear the barricades and ended up breaking them.

Videos on Twitter showed a brawl between protesters and Delhi Police personnel as the latter tried to break up the altercation. A woman police officer can be seen taking a woman away from the protest scene in one of the videos.

Unfazed, Punia declared the mahapanchayat will take place today without fail. He said the wrestlers would continue their struggle for their self-respect. The Olympian bronze medallist said the Modi government was destroying democracy on the very same day it was inaugurating a new Parliament. He urged the authorities to free protesters who had been detained by police.

The borders into Delhi had been shut since the morning over the mahapanchayat timing with the Parliament inauguration. Traffic jams were legion along the peripheries of the city as farmers in tractors were refused entry into Delhi, leading to a long pile-up of traffic.

The wrestlers have been on protest since April 23 seeking action against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the MP from Kaiserganj and a UP strongman, for sexually harassing women athletes.

The wrestlers have won widespread support from farmers who have now stepped in to seek justice for the exploited women.
