Cauvery water dispute: Karnataka government is not against protest, but opposition should refrain from gaining political mileage, says CM Siddaramaiah

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday asserted that his government does not oppose any protest, though there is a Supreme Court verdict against it. He added that the opposition should refrain from gaining political mileage, stating that there are few people and parties who are making the Cauvery issue political.

CM Siddaramaiah further underlined that they all must work for the people of Karnataka and not for self-political gains. Reportedly, there has been an escalating conflict between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu after the Cauvery Water Mangaement Authority (CWMA) issued an order asking Karnataka to release 5000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.

The pro-Kannada outfits, political groups and farmers associations called for a strike to protest against the release of Cauvery water to Tamil nadu. Speaking about the strike, the Bengaluru police stated that there is no permission for any bandh, protest or demonstration in the city. The police announced Section 144, a prohibition of assembling more than five people in the city.

On Monday, JDS supremo and former PM Devegowda wrote an open letter to PM Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention into the cauvery dispute. CM Siddaramaiah openly welcomed former PM Devegowda’s step. In his letter, JDS supremo asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to interfere in resolving the ongoing disputes and differences between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

In addition, he also suggested to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to form an external agency who can bring forth a permanent solution to the Cauvery water sharing dispute between both the states. Today, a 12 hour Bandh was called upon by the Farmer’s Organisation in Bengaluru, with support from opposition parties. As far as reports are concerned, another statewide bandh has also been issued for 29th of September.

While Karnataka Jala Samrakhshan Samiti, an umbrella outfit of farmers’ association and opposition parties in Karnataka are holding protests in the state regarding the Cauvery water sharing dispute, farmers in Tamil Nadu also took the street to protest on the same and demanded for the release of Cauvery water to the state from Karnataka.

The Congress party announced Telangana Congress Chief Revanth Reddy will be the next chief minister of the state on Tuesday. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said the swearing in ceremony is going to take place on December 7. The Congress party did not reveal whether there will be one or more deputy chief ministers and what role senior leaders from Telangana will have in the government.

Reddy has been credited for the Congress party’s thumping victory in the Telangana state elections. He was the face of the Congress’s winning campaign. Revanth Reddy is a Lok Sabha MP and a two time MLA. He represented the assembly of undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2009 and later in Telangana assembly in 2014.

Reddy started his political career with the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS. In 2007 he was elected as a Member of Legislative Council (MLC) as an independent candidate. Later Reddy joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). He was elected to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly from Kodangal constituency in 2009.

He quit the party after he found involved in an alledged bribing scandal. He joined the Congress party in 2017 and was appointed as the TPCC chief in 2021. The 54 year old leader earned many critics within the party ranks after he changed the style of functioning as a state Congress chief.

He was projected as a big stage leader and addressed many high ticket rallies in the campaigning for the assembly elections. Reddy is known to take on KCR and his family in his speeches and interviews. In a historic win the Congress party defeated the K Chandrasekhar Rao led (BRS) government as it crossed the majority mark by winning 64 seats in Telangana. The BRS trailed with 38 seats, while the BJP improved its 2018 tally by winning eight seats.  The AIMIM won 7 seats, while the CPI could manage only one seat.

In a terrifying footage of the incident, the accused was seen sitting next to Gogamedi before shooting him, taking him by surprise. He was close-range shot at least five times, the last bullet going right through his brain.

The commander of the fringe outfit can be seen on CCTV staring at his phone when the individuals seated across from him got up and opened fire. The gunmen opened fire on him after seeing one of his guards attempt to stop them.

They (the attackers) sat with Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi for at least 10 minutes before shooting him, according to police.

The men can be seen firing at Gogamedi repeatedly in the 20-second video, even after he had stopped moving.

Reports state that the incident happened at approximately 12:30 PM today. After being hurt and being taken to a hospital, Gogamedi and two of his friends were informed that the well-known Rajput chieftain had passed away.

Unseen on the footage, one of the attackers was killed by the crossfire. According to the authorities, the other two escaped in the motorbike of two guys they had threatened with pistols.

One of the Goldy Brar gang members has taken credit for the killing. We accept complete accountability for the killing of Sukhdev Gogamedi, Rohit Godara Kapurisr said on Facebook. He said the incident was sparked by Gogamedi’s used to support their enemies.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and several governmental agencies in the nation are looking for Canadian mobster Brar. The Punjabi artist Siddhu Moosewala’s murder is another reason he is wanted.

Gogamedi was a member of the Rajput Karni Sena, the group that had organised the demonstrations against the Bollywood film Padmaavat. Later, under the leadership of Lokendra Singh Kalvi, he broke away from the group and started his own group in 2015.
