Bihar lockdown: Nitish Kumar shuts down state till May 15

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced a statewide lockdown till May 15 amid the rise in Covid-19 cases. The announcement came hours after Patna High Court directed the Bihar government to impose a lockdown warning that otherwise the court may step in.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced a statewide lockdown till May 15 amid the rise in Covid-19 cases.

The announcement came hours after Patna High Court directed the Bihar government to impose a lockdown warning that otherwise the court may step in.The decision was taken a day after a high-level meeting with all ministers and top officials was held to take a call on the matter.

After discussion with the associate ministers and officials yesterday, it was decided to implement the lockdown in Bihar by May 15, 2021. In relation to its detailed guidelines and other activities, today the Crisis management group has been instructed to take action,  the chief minister said in his Twitter post.

Bihar has reported 11,407 fresh Covid-19 cases and 82 deaths, taking the state’s overall tally to over 5.09 lakh and more than 2,800 fatalities. Of 82 new deaths, Patna accounted for 24 casualties while Muzaffarpur recorded 13 fatalities, Madhepura recorded 6  and West Champaran reported 5. 

Among the 11,407 new cases, Patna, the worst-hit city, accounted for 2028. Other districts like Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Begusarai recorded 662 cases, 653 and 510 Covid-19 cases respectively.

Earlier, in view of the surging Covid infection in the state, the Bihar government had imposed a night curfew till March 15. 

The state administration had also announced free vaccination for all adults. So far, 72,658 beneficiaries were administered jabs on Monday while a total of 74,18,981 people have been inoculated in the 45-plus age group to date. The inoculation of those above 18 years age is yet to commence in the state due to the non-availability of the additional stock.

Meanwhile, India is recording more than 3 lakh cases over the past few weeks.Congress leader Rahul Gandhi , in a tweet, suggested  that the only way to stop the spread of the virus is a full lockdown. Even the US government said that it was the only way to stem the world’s worst virus outbreak.

According to reports, the incident happened at the Muzaffarpur-Narkatiaganj railway section, triggering panic among passengers.

A team of East Central Railway officials immediately rushed to the spot and reattached the separated bogies to the train running from Bihar’s Raxaul district to New Delhi. As per officials, the coupling is used to connect two bogies together malfunctioned resulting in bogies getting separated from the engine.

A video of the incident is doing the rounds on the internet.

The officials said that no passenger was injured in the incident and a probe has been launched to investigate the malfunction.

Local media reported that the incident took place at around 10 am on Thursday morning and the engine travelled several kilometers after the bogies were detached.

In a similar incident, three bogies of a goods train derailed at the Tankuppa station in Bihar due to which two trains were cancelled and several more had to be diverted in December last year. Railway officials said the accident happened because the brakes on the train got jammed.

No injuries were reported in the mishap.

A man was electrocuted while trying to hoist the national flag on Thursday in Ramnagar area of Bihar’s Sitamarhi district.

According to reports, the deceased identified as Abhishek Jha, sustained a high-voltage electric shock while trying to hoist the tricolor on the nation’s Republic Day.

Jha, who ran a private tuition centre, used to hoist the Indian flag every year on Republic Day, however, on this fateful day, an electric current passed through the iron mast and he came in with an 11’000-volt wire.

Abhiskek Jha died on the spot, while four other persons who tried to save him, sustained grievous injuries, the police said.

The injured have been shifted to Sadar hospital where one of them is reportedly critical.

Last year, a child was killed, while several others sustained severe burns after being electrocuted by coming in contact with a flagpole during a Republic Day function at a local primary school in Bihar’s Buxar district.

The incident took place at Nathpur Primary School on January 26, 2022 during the flag hoisting ceremony. Reports at the time said that the flag pole had a current running through it and the children received an electric shock when they came in contact.

Two people died while dozens reportedly fell ill after consuming toxic liquor in the Lakari Nabiganj area of Bihar’s Siwan district on Sunday.

Reports quoting local police officials said the duo were brought to Siwan hospital where they were declared “brought dead”. They had complained of stomach pain and blurred vision due to consumption of spurious liquor.

They said that five others are hospitalized at the medical facility and cause of death of the two deceased can only be ascertained after post-mortem reports.

The deceased, identified as Janak Bean alias Janak Prasad and Naresh Bean, both residents of Bala village in Siwan’s Nabiganj, complained of stomach pain and blurred vision overnight, following which they were brought to the Siwan Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared them ‘brought dead’.

The local district administration has started running awareness camps in the village after multiple deaths due to toxic liquor came to the fore.

A local district official said that dozens of people fell ill, while two persons lost their lives after consuming spurious liquor, adding that police and administration have set up camps in the village.

Reports say that the number of deaths due to toxic liquor is likely to increase.

The incident comes a little over a month after the Bihar Police recovered toxic liquor bottles hidden in a gutter in Danapur on December 21, 2022.

The Nitish Kumar regime has banned sale and consumption of alcohol in Bihar since April 2016.
