On questioning the Mehak Restaurant, the owner said that his worker had bought newspapers from a salvage store and used these newspapers to wrap food items for customers, just like many restaurants do, without realizing that these newspapers depict photos of Hindu deities.

The family member of Talib, who has been running the restaurant since 2012, said newspapers have been used to pack food items for years. He further said that no one remembers the headlines or photographs in the newspapers before using them to wrap food items.

Earlier, during the Navaratri festival, a local Hindi daily reported that Talib used to pack non-veg items in the newspapers that depicted photos of Hindu deities. According to Circle officer Jitendra Kumar, police rushed to the hotel after receiving a report on Sunday night and seized the objectionable items. Owing to the complex situation, police instantly filed an FIR and detained the owner of the restaurant for insulting a certain group’s religious beliefs.

Delhi Assembly elections: BJP promises free education and student aid, AAP raises concerns

Arvind Kejriwal addressing media after writing to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on BJP’s alleged electoral misconduct

As Delhi gears up for the upcoming assembly elections on February 5, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released the second installment of its election manifesto, promising comprehensive solutions to citizen issues and tackling misgovernance and corruption allegations against the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The manifesto, dubbed ‘sankalp patra,’ includes significant pledges such as free education from pre-school to postgraduate levels for needy students at government institutions, and a financial package comprising Rs 15,000 and travel reimbursements for young individuals taking entrance exams. Scheduled Caste students enrolled in technical and professional courses are also promised a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000.

Building on their first manifesto which targeted women voters, the BJP’s latest promises focus on the youth, with over 1.5 lakh set to benefit from a new skills training program. This release follows criticisms by AAP of the BJP’s approach, especially after the tragic incident last July where three civil service aspirants lost their lives due to flooding.

Anurag Thakur, former Union Minister, emphasized the ‘Modi ki guarantee’ assurance, stating these initiatives would be implemented swiftly if the BJP is elected. The manifesto also includes welfare measures for domestic workers and insurance schemes for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers, who have traditionally been a strong support base for AAP.

In response, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal critiqued the BJP’s plans, particularly highlighting a clause that, according to him, would limit free education to only “eligible” children, deviating from AAP’s policy of universal free education. Kejriwal also recalled BJP’s earlier statement on discontinuing free healthcare, framing these promises as a threat to the financial stability of Delhi’s households.

The AAP’s counter-campaign warns voters that electing BJP could lead to increased living costs and bureaucratic hurdles in accessing education and healthcare, urging the electorate to consider these factors carefully. With the election results due on February 8, both parties continue to vie for public favor through promises aimed at key demographics.

Security forces during a nighttime operation in Chhattisgarh's forest area

In a significant security operation last night, 20 Maoists, including a high-ranking leader with a Rs 1 crore bounty on his head, were killed in an encounter in Gariaband district, Chhattisgarh. Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded the operation, labeling it a “major success” in the ongoing effort to dismantle Naxalism.

The encounter, which occurred in a dense forest along the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border, resulted in the death of Jayaram Reddy, a senior Maoist leader better known by his alias Chalapati. Reddy was a prominent figure within the Maoist central committee, involved in planning and leading various operations across the region.

The operation was a coordinated effort involving personnel from the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) of Chhattisgarh, and the Special Operation Group (SOG) from Odisha. Acting on reliable intelligence, the security forces engaged the Maoists in the Kularighat reserve forest, approximately five kilometers from the Odisha border.

In the aftermath, security officials recovered a significant cache of arms, including self-loading rifles, ammunition, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). A comprehensive search operation continues in the area to ensure all threats are neutralized.

Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing his resolve to eradicate Maoist elements by March 2026, stated on the social media platform X, “Our security forces achieved a major success towards building a Naxal-free Bharat.” He emphasized the joint efforts contributing to the diminishing threat of Naxalism in the region.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also praised the operation, underscoring the effectiveness of the security forces under the current government. He affirmed the state’s commitment to eliminating Maoist influence by the set target date.

This year, Chhattisgarh has witnessed a significant reduction in Maoist activity, with about 40 Maoists eliminated in various operations. Chalapati, among those killed, was a pivotal figure with extensive experience in guerrilla warfare, operating from the challenging terrains of Abujhmad and recently relocating closer to the Odisha border for strategic advantages.

The operation marks a critical milestone in the ongoing battle against Naxalism, reflecting the intensified efforts by the security forces to secure peace and order in regions affected by Maoist insurgency.
