Bullet trains only for elite, Railways services in poor state: Metro man E Sreedharan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious bullet train project has been dubbed as “expensive and beyond the reach of ordinary people” and one that “will cater only to the elite community” by E Sreedharan, popularly known as the Metro Man of the country.

Notably, his comments come just a week after Modi government chose E Sreedharan to head a committee to lay down standards for metro rail systems in the country, said a report in The Economic Times (ET).

Sreedharan, in an interview to The Hindustan Times (HT), said bullet trains are beyond the reach of common man and that it will cater only to the elite community. Stating that the Indian Railways is 20 years behind those of advanced nations, he said what India needs is a modern, clean, safe and fast railway system.

Sreedharan said, “Bullet trains will cater only to the elite community. It is highly expensive and beyond the reach of ordinary people. What India needs is a modern, clean, safe and fast rail system.”

The Japan-backed Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project costing $17 billion is expected to be constructed by August 2022. Modi has called the project crucial for his pet ‘Make in India’ campaign aimed at lifting the share of manufacturing in India’s $2 trillion economy. The government also hopes to generate hundreds of jobs through the train project.

The project has been questioned on other counts as well. Actor Nandita Das tweeted: “‏Sreedharan isn’t the only one who thinks the bullet train is a bad idea. So do farmers in South Gujarat.”

Sreedhanarn, 86, is a retired officer of the Indian Engineering Service and advisor to several Metro projects in India.

Refuting claims that the Indian Railways has made progress with bio-toilets, speed and cleanliness, Sreedharan said, “Apart from bio-toilets, there is no technical upgradation. Speed has not increased. In fact, the average speed of most prestigious trains has come down.”

Talking about train timings and late running of trains, he said, “Punctuality is worst – officially 70%, actually less than 50%.”

Speaking on the railway accidents and deaths, he said, “Accident record has not improved. Many also die on tracks, at level-crossings, in suburban sections. Almost 20,000 lives are lost on tracks yearly. I feel Indian Railways is 20 years behind those of advanced nations.”

Sreedharan will head a newly constituted high-level committee to lay down indigenous technical standards for all metro rail systems across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi cleared Sreedharan’s appointment last month.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 28 flagged off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains, strengthening rail connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The newly launched weekly services will operate on two key routes — Varanasi (Banaras) to Hadapsar in Pune and Ayodhya to Mumbai’s Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.

Improved connectivity between spiritual and economic hubs

The new trains are designed to link major spiritual centres like Varanasi and Ayodhya with important economic cities such as Pune and Mumbai. This is expected to improve travel convenience for passengers, including pilgrims and migrant workers.

The Ayodhya–Mumbai route, in particular, is likely to support religious tourism linked to the Ram Temple while also easing long-distance travel demand between Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Focus on affordable and inclusive rail travel

The Amrit Bharat Express trains are aimed at providing affordable, non-AC long-distance travel with improved safety and comfort features. These services are part of a broader push to make rail transport more accessible to the common public.

Officials said the trains will run weekly and pass through multiple key stations across states, enhancing regional connectivity along the route.

Boost to indian railways network

The launch is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to expand railway infrastructure and improve connectivity across regions. With these additions, direct rail links between northern and western India are expected to become more efficient and accessible.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recorded a sweeping victory in Gujarat’s local body elections, winning all 15 municipal corporations across the state and reinforcing its dominance in urban governance.

The results underline the party’s strong grip in key cities, including Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot, where it secured overwhelming majorities and left opposition parties far behind.

In Ahmedabad, the BJP won 146 out of 192 seats, while the Congress lagged significantly with just a handful of seats. Similar trends were seen in other major cities, where the ruling party maintained a clear lead.

The most notable political shift emerged in Surat, where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a sharp decline. After making gains in the previous election, AAP managed to secure only four seats this time, while the BJP surged ahead with 115 seats, effectively ending AAP’s position as a strong urban challenger in the city.

Across Rajkot and Vadodara as well, the BJP posted dominant performances, winning large seat shares and keeping the Congress confined to limited numbers.

Overall, the results reflect a broader trend of BJP consolidation not only in urban centres but also across local governance structures. The party also performed strongly in municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats, though opposition parties retained small pockets of support in some rural areas.

The outcome is being seen as a significant political boost for the BJP in its traditional stronghold, while raising concerns for opposition parties struggling to expand their base in the state.
