Centre issues advisory to OTT platforms, self-regulation bodies amid Ranveer Allahbadia row

This crackdown follows recent remarks made by the Supreme Court, which pointed out significant gaps in the existing regulatory framework for online content distribution.

In response to escalating concerns over indecent content circulating on social media, the central government has issued a stern warning to over-the-top (OTT) platforms regarding their compliance with legal standards.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has released an advisory reminding these platforms and their self-regulatory bodies to strictly follow the Code of Ethics outlined in the IT Rules-2021 while managing and distributing content.

Recent complaints lodged by Members of Parliament, statutory bodies, and members of the public have highlighted the distribution of obscene, pornographic, and vulgar content by certain OTT services and social media channels. In light of these grievances, the Ministry emphasized the need for OTT platforms to ensure their content complies with applicable laws, specifically regarding the age-based classification of material.

The government’s advisory explicitly states that OTT platforms must not transmit any illegal content. Additionally, they are instructed to implement age-based content ratings consistent with guidelines provided in the IT Rules. This means that platforms must include access control mechanisms to restrict ‘A’ rated content from child viewership and exercise diligence in content moderation.

This crackdown follows recent remarks made by the Supreme Court, which pointed out significant gaps in the existing regulatory framework for online content distribution. The court raised concerns about the unregulated nature of content shared on platforms like YouTube, suggesting a more comprehensive approach to managing digital content and ensuring it adheres to societal standards.

The advisory underscores a growing recognition of the need for responsible content sharing in the digital age, aiming to curb the proliferation of inappropriate material across various online platforms. The Ministry’s call for stricter adherence to the Code of Ethics aligns with ongoing discussions about enhancing regulatory measures for digital content, signalling a commitment to uphold legal standards and protect internet users, particularly children, from potentially harmful exposure.
