Centre to hold 3rd round of talks with farmers at Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan
Hours before the talks, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and Tomar are meeting at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, reports said suggesting the government may make amendments in the laws.

After the failed round of talks between the government and the farmers, the Centre is all set to hold a third round of talks with the protesting farmers over the three contentious bills on Saturday. The meeting will take place at 2 pm at Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar. Hours before the talks, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and Tomar are meeting at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, reports said suggesting the government may make amendments in the laws.
Thousands of farmers are camping at several Delhi-borders and are insistent on the laws being repealed. Despite repeated assurances from the Centre on Minimum Support Price being given to the framers, the two rounds of talks have fallen through. Some farmers are protesting in the protest site Burari decided by the government. Others are camping outside fearing their protest may weaken. This is the biggest farmers’ protest in years and that too in times of coronavirus that has affected over 96 lakhs people across India. The farmers are adamant that they won’t go back until the controversial farm laws are not taken back. The agitating farmers’ fear that scraping the Minimum Support Price and mandi system will leave them to the mercy of big corporates.
Kailash Choudhary, MoS Agriculture has said farmers’ doubts will be cleared in today’s meeting with the government. He has accused opposition of playing politics, provoking farmers against the government and instigating protests. Choudhary is hopeful that today’s meeting will be fruitful and farmers will roll back protest.
Protesting farmers have called a nationwide shutdown on Tuesday, December 8. Last evening at least 40 farmers’ unions met at Delhi-Haryana border and said they’ll block all roads to Delhi and also occupy all highway toll gates across the country.
A petition has also been filed in the Supreme Court on Friday that has sought immediate removal or shifting of the protesting farmers, quoting top courts’ judgement on the protests against the Centre’s CAA law. The petition said life of lakhs of people protesting at Delhi Borders is at immediate threat. If by chance this coronavirus disease takes the shape of community spread, it will cause havoc in the country.
