Congress hits back at Israeli envoy over undiplomatic attack on Priyanka Gandhi

The Congress party launched a sharp attack on Israeli ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, after his remarks criticising Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. Several senior leaders called the diplomat’s language undiplomatic and distasteful, urging the Indian government to respond.

Former Union Minister Anand Sharma condemned Azar’s brazen denial of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, accusing him of justifying the deaths of over 60,000 civilians, including children, women, and the elderly. He described his language as unacceptable and stated that the world is appalled by the destruction of schools and hospitals, as well as the starvation of civilians, describing it as an unforgivable crime against humanity in a post on X.

Congress leader Pawan Khera urged External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to take action, questioning whether India’s freedom of speech was now being regulated from Tel Aviv. He described Azar’s targeting of a sitting MP as a direct affront to the dignity of Indian democracy and accused Israel of attempting to whitewash civilian deaths in Gaza.

The Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, described the Israeli envoy’s remarks as a serious breach of privilege and called for Parliament to address the issue. He asserted that Parliament could not stand by idly, even if the Union Government decided to remain silent.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh also denounced the Azar’s response and criticised the Modi government for extreme moral cowardice in failing to speak out against Israel’s actions. He urged the Centre to take serious exception to his remarks.

Priyanka had described the Gaza crisis as genocide by Israel, claiming that over 60,000 people, including 18,430 children, had been killed. She accused Israel of starving civilians and criticised the Indian government for its silence, calling it shameful.

In his reply, Azar accused Priyanka of deceit and claimed that Israel had killed 25,000 Hamas fighters, not civilians. He alleged Hamas used civilians as shields, shot those trying to flee, and fired rockets from populated areas. The envoy also said Israel had delivered two million tonnes of food to Gaza and denied genocide allegations, stating the population there had grown by 450% over the past five decades.

The initiatives are part of a broader push to strengthen infrastructure and public services in the Prime Minister’s parliamentary constituency.

Focus on infrastructure and connectivity

According to official details, a total of 48 completed projects were inaugurated, covering key sectors such as road connectivity, rail infrastructure and urban services.

Among the major highlights is the widening of the Varanasi-Azamgarh road, aimed at easing traffic flow and improving regional connectivity.

Additionally, new rail over bridges at Kazzakpura and Kadipur have been opened to reduce congestion and enhance transport efficiency in the city.

Urban development and public utilities

The Prime Minister also inaugurated a sewage treatment plant in Bhagwanpur with a capacity of 55 million litres per day, targeting improved sanitation and water management in the region.

These projects are expected to support long-term urban development and improve quality of life for residents.

The BJP has secured a sweeping victory in Gujarat civic polls, winning all 15 municipal corporations, with AAP suffering a major setback in Surat.

BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recorded a sweeping victory in Gujarat’s local body elections, winning all 15 municipal corporations across the state and reinforcing its dominance in urban governance.

The results underline the party’s strong grip in key cities, including Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot, where it secured overwhelming majorities and left opposition parties far behind.

In Ahmedabad, the BJP won 146 out of 192 seats, while the Congress lagged significantly with just a handful of seats. Similar trends were seen in other major cities, where the ruling party maintained a clear lead.

The most notable political shift emerged in Surat, where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a sharp decline. After making gains in the previous election, AAP managed to secure only four seats this time, while the BJP surged ahead with 115 seats, effectively ending AAP’s position as a strong urban challenger in the city.

Across Rajkot and Vadodara as well, the BJP posted dominant performances, winning large seat shares and keeping the Congress confined to limited numbers.

Overall, the results reflect a broader trend of BJP consolidation not only in urban centres but also across local governance structures. The party also performed strongly in municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats, though opposition parties retained small pockets of support in some rural areas.

The outcome is being seen as a significant political boost for the BJP in its traditional stronghold, while raising concerns for opposition parties struggling to expand their base in the state.

BJP Minister Nitesh Rane gets one-month jail in 2019 mud attack case, sentence suspended

Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane has been sentenced to one month in jail in a 2019 case involving a mud attack on an NHAI engineer, though the sentence has been suspended for appeal.

Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane has been sentenced to one month in jail by a court in Sindhudurg in connection with a 2019 incident in which an engineer of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was assaulted by being covered in mud during a protest.

The court held Rane guilty of insulting and humiliating a public servant during an inspection of the Mumbai-Goa highway, where he had raised concerns over poor road conditions.

Court says lawmakers cannot take law into their own hands

While delivering the verdict, the court observed that elected representatives are expected to uphold the law and not engage in acts that undermine public officials. It noted that even if the intention was to highlight public grievances, such actions cannot be justified.

The judge also emphasised that such conduct could discourage public servants from performing their duties with dignity if left unchecked.

Sentence suspended, appeal likely

Soon after pronouncing the sentence, the court suspended the one-month imprisonment, allowing Rane time to challenge the conviction in a higher court.

In the same case, 29 other accused were acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence.

Background of the case

The incident dates back to 2019 when Rane, then in the opposition, led a protest over the poor condition of the Mumbai-Goa highway. During the demonstration, an NHAI engineer was allegedly restrained and mud was poured on him in public.

The case had led to multiple charges, including assault on a public servant and criminal conspiracy, though the court did not find enough evidence to sustain most of these charges.
