Night Curfew

In wake of the surge in Covid-19 cases, the Karnataka government announced on Thursday that it will enforce a night curfew in Bengaluru and six other cities from 10 pm to 5 pm starting Saturday. The decision came minutes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged states to announce curbs to tackle the increasing number of Covid-19 infections.

Karanataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa announced that the curfew, which will be in place till April 20, will also be imposed in cities like Kalaburagi, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Bidar, Tumakuru, and Udupi-Manipal. Essential services will continue, he said.

Karnataka is among 10 states besides Maharashtra, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh, that have shown a steep rise in the daily Covid-19 infections. According to the Union Health Ministry, these states have accounted for 84.21 percent of the record 1.26 lakh new infections on Thursday.

The state has been witnessing a huge spike in Covid-19 infections over the last month with Bengaluru reporting most of the fresh numbers. The city has recorded over 4000 daily coronavirus cases for the past few days. Active cases in Karnataka have now crossed 50,000. Over 50 lakh Covid vaccine shots have been administered so far.

India has administered over 8.48 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines since the Centre launched the vaccination drive. During this period, 1.02 crore people got both doses of the Covid-19 vaccines, which is not even one percent of the estimated 137 crore population of India. The share of Covid-19 vaccination would go up to around three percent if one-dose beneficiaries are taken into account.

National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday praised his old friend Rahul Gandhi and said that the Congress leader was giving a direct fight to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha elections.

Abdullah while speaking to the media said Rahul Gandhi is putting the most spirited fights in the Lok Sabha elections. The former chief minister praised Gandhi for taking the fight directly to the Prime Minister and said this is the reason why the Prime Minister is relentlessly attacking him individually.

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said this election for the people of Jammu and Kashmir is a first in many respects. It is the first election for them as a Union Territory. He further added that it is the first time an election is taking place for them after the momentous events of August 5, 2019, when Article 370 was removed. He said this is the first instance when an election is being fought in Jammu and Kashmir after its status was changed from a state to a union territory.

Abdullah questioned why have the people of Jammu and Kashmir been deprived of democracy? Abdullah asked what was their crime? He said the status and relationship of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the Union has been altered without any consultation with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
