Deepika Padukone’s visit to JNU invites both praise and criticism
Actor Deepika Padukone’s visit to Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Univeristy (JNU) last night drew a lot of attention. Hashtags ‘boycottchhapaak’ and ‘IStandwithDeepika’ started trending on Twitter as soon as she photographs of meeting with JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh started doing the rounds.
While BJP supporters and a few leaders also called for a boycott of her movies, Union minister Prakash Javadekar clarified that any common man has the right to express their opinion.”There can be no objection to it,” he added.
On Sunday evening, over 30 students and teachers, including Aishe Ghosh were attacked by masked miscreants who entered the university campus, armed with iron rods, sledgehammers and stones. The injured were later admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
According to reports, Padukone stayed on campus for about 10 minutes. The actor, however, didn’t speak to the media.
In an interview with India Today earlier, Padukone talked about the recent attacks, “I feel angry that this is happening but at the same time the fact that action has not been taken, this is what one needs to think about it,”.
Deepika Padukone was in Delhi to promote her upcoming film Chhapaak. The film, directed by Meghna Gulzar, is based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
Minutes after her appearance at the protest, BJP’s Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga called for a boycott of her films. He urged his followers to boycott movies of Padukone for her support to TukdeTukdeGang and Afzal Gang.

BJP’s national spokesperson Nupur Sharma also tweeted on Deepika Padukone’s visit.
:@deepikapadukone I usually avoid tweeting to Bollywood but if this is your bid to sell a movie on a woman’s fight by sharing stage with somebody penalised for sexual misconduct (he flashed himself to a woman student at JNU in 2015) then it defeats the very purpose!
— Nupur Sharma (@NupurSharmaBJP) January 7, 2020
Economist and former chief economist of World Bank, Kaushik Basu saw Padukone’s visit to JNU as a ploy to drive ticket sales of her upcoming movie, Chhapaak.
Simple arithmetic of Deepika Padukone’s JNU visit. A vast majority of people support her. The easy way to neutralize the few who plan to boycott her film is for others to see it twice. It’s easy to see that, by this logic, if 10% boycott her film the viewership will go up by 80%.

BJP national spokeperson Sambit Patra took a veiled jibe at the actor’s move.

BJP leader Ram Kadam also condemned the actor’s visit and deemed it as “unfortunate”. “It is unfortunate that Deepika Padukone visited JNU. We condemn this,” Kadam was quoted saying by ANI.
BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain attacked the 34-year old actor, saying that her visit to the university reflected her “one-sided thinking”.
Madhya Pradesh BJP’s vice president, Rameshwar Sharma also took a jibe at the actor. Sharma said, “Deepika Padukone is standing with those who are anti-nationals.”
However, the actor’s presence at the protest also received admiration from activists, actors and journalists.
Many Bollywood personalities including Anurag Kashyap, Swara Bhasker, Varun Grover and Prakash Raj came out in Padukone’s support.
Let’s not forget she is also the producer of the films .. stakes are even higher . Mad respect for @deepikapadukone https://t.co/y5CPzSEedU

This isn’t the first time that Padukone has faced opposition from right-wing organizations. For her movie 2018 period drama Padmavat, Padukone received death threats, where a political leader called for the beheading of the actor.
Chief ministers of BJP-ruled states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat had also called for a ban on the period drama.

Adityanath was addressing an election rally in Gaisdi where he was seeking votes for the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Shravasti Saket Mishra and the party’s nominee for by-elections in Gaisdi Lok Sabha seat Shailesh Kumar Singh Shailu.
He said the BJP is serving the public under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and they do not practice discrimination and are working with the spirit of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas. He said everyone should remain cautious and all alert about the conspiracy being hatched by INDIAlliance. Adityanath sharpened his attack on the INDIA bloc and said the opposition parties are using all kinds of tricks to come back to power.
Adityanath pointed out that the deeds of the opposition parties are not hidden from the public. They are planning to conduct a survey of the property of people for the removal of poverty from the country. He said everyone should remain cautious and alert as the opposition parties are planning to implement inheritance tax which is similar to Jaziya imposed by Mughal emperor Aurengzeb.

Pune police arrest father after son’s fatal Porsche crash, restaurant owner also detained
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar mentioned that the father was detained from Maharashtra’s Sambhajinagar in the morning and was formally arrested after being brought to Pune.
The Pune police have arrested the father of the juvenile involved in the fatal accident that occurred on Monday morning. The minor was driving a Porsche without a registration number, which crashed into a bike, resulting in two deaths. The authorities have also arrested the owners of two restaurants and a staff member for serving alcohol to minors.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed that the father of the accused has been arrested after he attempted to evade capture. He mentioned that the father was detained from Maharashtra’s Sambhajinagar in the morning and was formally arrested after being brought to Pune.
Among those arrested were Pralhad Bhutada, owner of Cosie, and Sandip Sangale, owner of Blak Club. The Pune Police Commissioner added that the license holders of two restaurants and one more person were arrested late last night and would be produced in court today.
The minor’s father, a prominent real estate developer in Pune, reportedly manages a famous club and has built a star hotel in addition to several significant projects. The Pune Police have booked the aforesaid people under the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) and the Juvenile Justice Act (JJA) for failing in their duties as guardians and for allowing the minor to drive without a license.
The Yerawada police arrested the father for permitting the minor to drive, while the restaurant owners and staff were charged for serving liquor to the minor. The Police have invoked sections 3, 5, and 199A of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, and sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. The action was taken after police found that the Porsche, purchased in March, had not been registered.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra assembly Vijay Wadettiwar demanded a judicial inquiry into the accident. He said that there is a question mark on Pune Police’s investigation, therefore a judicial inquiry should be conducted in this case.
He further pointed out that the police have reported that the alcohol test of the accused in the Pune accident was negative, but the CCTV footage of the accused, who is a minor, is drunk and that the report is raising a question mark on the police investigation.
