Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman meets Rifleman Aurangzeb's family in Jammu and Kashmir

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today (Wednesday, June 20) met the family of martyred Indian soldier Aurangzeb’s family in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch. The Defence Minister was accompanied by high-ranking officials from Indian Army and J&K Police.

Her visit comes two days after Army chief Bipin Rawat met Aurangzeb’s family.

Sitharaman offered her condolences and encouraged family members of the soldier and said that his “supreme sacrifice” for the nation would not go in vain, according to reports.

“I came to meet martyr’s family. I have spent some time here. One message I can take back from here is that here’s a family, here’s a martyr, who stands out as an inspiration for us and that is the message that I am carrying from here,” she told reporters in Poonch today.

Rifleman Aurangzeb was kidnapped by terrorists last week while he was on his way home to celebrate Eid. He was later shot dead.  His body was found by a search team of the police and Army at Gussu village, about 10 km away from Kalampora in Pulwama district. According to reports, fifteen bullet wounds were found on the soldier’s body. He had been shot in his head and neck.

Aurangzeb was a rifleman with 4 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry. He was posted with 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR). The 44 RR has been India’s most successful counterinsurgency unit this year.

Sources in the intelligence agencies have said that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) may have been involved in the killing of Aurangzeb. According to reports, ISI is keeping a close watch on the local situation in Jammu and Kashmir due to an increased tension in the Kashmir valley after the killing and support for the Indian Army.

Last week, the Indian Army paid tribute to Aurangzeb and a rifleman — Manvendra Singh — who was killed in an operation in the Panar forests in Bandipora.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday unveiled his party’s manifesto for the Maharashtra Assembly elections, assuring free education for male students, stabilising prices of essential items and scrapping of the Dharavi redevelopment project.

Speaking on the occasion, Thackeray said he presented his party’s promises to the public about what will be done after the Maha Vikas Aghadi consists of the Congress, NCP (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT) government comes to power and “how we will serve the people”.

“We do what we say. We have fulfilled many promises and even today whatever promises we have made, we will fulfill them after getting the blessings of the people,” he said.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief said most of the election promises are part of the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) overall assurances, but there are some points that need special attention.

The MVA also launched its manifesto for the November 20 state Assembly polls, he said.

Thackeray assured that the way female students in the state were getting free education under a government policy, it would be implemented for male students as well if the MVA comes to power.

Thackeray said if the MVA comes to power, it will scrap cluster development of Koliwadas and Gaothans and it will be done after taking the residents into confidence. The Sena (UBT) head also said his party will work towards creating jobs. The MVA will also keep stable the prices of essential commodities, he said.

On the Dharavi redevelopment project, the former chief minister said it will be scrapped as the project will have ramifications on Mumbai.

Maharashtra and Mumbai will also have a housing policy keeping the rapid urbanisation in mind, he said.
