The Delhi government is aiming to significantly expand its piped natural gas (PNG) network by rolling out an additional 4 lakh connections, as part of efforts to reduce dependence on LPG cylinders and improve household access to cleaner fuel.
At present, the city has infrastructure to support nearly 18 lakh PNG connections, out of which around 14 lakh are already active. Officials are now focusing on closing this gap while extending the network to areas that still rely heavily on LPG.
Power Minister Ashish Sood reviewed the progress during a meeting on Monday and directed authorities to streamline the application process. He stressed that obtaining a PNG connection should be made “simple, transparent, and citizen-friendly.”
Faster rollout and awareness campaigns planned
Currently, about 10,000 new PNG connections are added every month. Authorities are now targeting an increase to 25,000 monthly connections to accelerate the rollout.
To support this, a door-to-door awareness campaign is being planned, particularly in areas where adoption remains low. Special focus will be given to unauthorised colonies and rural pockets where pipeline infrastructure is still developing.
Challenges remain in densely populated parts of the city, where narrow lanes and multi-storey buildings make pipeline installation difficult. Work is underway to address these logistical issues and improve connectivity in such areas.
Expansion beyond households
The government is also looking to expand PNG usage beyond residential spaces. Public facilities such as night shelters, mid-day meal kitchens, and Atal canteens are being considered for PNG connections, along with establishments run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
A broader push is also being explored for commercial spaces, including restaurants, hotels, and religious institutions.
PNG offers a continuous supply of gas, removing the need for cylinder refills, which officials say makes it a more convenient and efficient option for users.
