Delhi Pollution: GRAP-3 restrictions back in capital, hybrid mode for up to Class 5

The Commission for Air Quality Management said that GRAP-III recommendations have been reimposed across Delhi and the national capital region following highly unfavourable meteorological conditions, including calm winds and very low mixing height.

Under GRAP-III restrictions, all schools in Delhi-NCR must switch to a hybrid class mode for students till Class V, and there will be restrictions on the entry of diesel-powered commercial vehicles.

Furthermore, goods vehicles with engines below the BS-IV certification cannot run, except for those used for emergency purposes or to provide essential services, and goods carriers registered outside the national capital cannot, till further notice, enter the city if their engine is below the BS-IV mark.

Individuals with disabilities are exempt from the restrictions on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles in Delhi and the surrounding districts of Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Budh Nagar under Stage III.

In addition, the Delhi and NCR state governments have been instructed to stagger working hours for public offices and municipal bodies during Stage III. Reportedly, the Centre may also implement similar staggered timings for central government offices in the Delhi-NCR region.

At around 2.30 pm the city’s AQI was 366, which is in the higher end of the very poor category. Notably, this is a sharp spike from seven days ago; on December 7 it was 233, which classified it as moderate. Also, three days before that, Delhi’s AQI was at 211.

This improvement in air quality meant the Supreme Court, on December 5, allowed the CAQM to relax anti-pollution measures from GRAP-IV, the strictest of a four-stage Graded Response Action Plan meant to tackle deteriorating air pollution in the national capital region.

Previous month the air quality in Delhi and the surrounding areas was consistently in the severe and very poor category, prompting annual health warnings from medical professionals and triggering a rush of cases before the Supreme Court asking for directions to the government.

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was hospitalized early this morning after being stabbed multiple times at his Bandra residence in an apparent burglary attempt. The incident occurred around 2 AM at his Satguru Sharan building home, with the actor sustaining six stab wounds, two of which are critically deep, according to Lilavati Hospital officials.

Dr. Niraj Uttamani, Chief Operating Officer at Lilavati Hospital, confirmed that one of the wounds is perilously close to Khan’s spine. “He was rushed to the hospital at 3:30 AM and immediately taken into surgery,” stated Dr. Uttamani. The surgical team, led by neurosurgeon Dr. Nitin Dange, alongside cosmetic surgeon Dr. Leena Jain and anesthesiologist Dr. Nisha Gandhi, worked extensively to address the injuries.

Although the neurosurgery has concluded, plastic surgeons are still repairing the other severe wounds. “Saif is out of danger now, and we expect to provide a more detailed report soon,” added Dr. Uttamani.

An official statement from Mr. Khan’s team shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident, revealing that the actor was attacked by an intruder during an attempted robbery. The statement also urged the media and fans for patience as it is now a police matter.

Police have launched a full investigation, registering an FIR against the assailant who managed to flee the scene. The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken up a parallel investigation, with seven teams deployed to locate the suspect, including scrutinizing CCTV footage and conducting area searches.

This alarming event has not only shaken the Bollywood community but also highlighted concerns over celebrity safety in the city. More updates are expected as the investigations progress and as Mr. Khan’s condition stabilizes.

Delhi Police files case against BJP’s Parvesh Verma on EC’s direction for distributing shoes

Following a complaint filed by a lawyer, the Returning Officer for the New Delhi constituency sent a letter to Mandir Marg police station on Wednesday requesting the registration of an FIR against the BJP leader.

Trouble is brewing for BJP’s Parvesh Verma after the Delhi Police filed a case against him on Wednesday regarding the distribution of shoes to voters. The Returning Officer for the New Delhi Assembly Constituency alerted the Station House Officer (SHO) Mandir Marg Police Station about this issue on January 15.

The controversy arose from the BJP candidate’s distribution of shoes at Valmiki Temple, just days before the assembly polls scheduled for February 5 in the national capital. The Returning Officer requested the SHO to register a First Information Report (FIR) and initiate an immediate investigation following a complaint against Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma.

A video shared by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on X showed Verma, the son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma and a two-term MP from West Delhi, placing shoes on elderly women’s feet and then seeking their blessings while his supporters chanted “Long live Parvesh Verma.”

In its post featuring the video, filmed at the Valmiki Temple near Mandir Marg in the New Delhi constituency, AAP stated, “Can’t the Election Commission see democracy being undermined? On one hand, BJP candidate Parvesh Verma is openly distributing shoes on the streets while posing for photos and videos. On the other hand, the District Election Officer remains silent. If the Election Commission does not take action against this blatant violation of the code of conduct, what does it mean for elections and the democratic process?”

Following a complaint filed by a lawyer, the Returning Officer for the New Delhi constituency sent a letter to Mandir Marg police station on Wednesday requesting the registration of an FIR against the BJP leader.

The Returning Officer noted, “According to Section 123 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, any gift, offer, or promise made by a candidate or their agent, or by any other person with the candidate’s or their election agent’s consent, constitutes corrupt practices.”

He added, “Consequently, I direct that an immediate investigation be conducted into this matter, appropriate action be taken for the violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), and that a report on the actions taken be submitted to me at the earliest.” In response to the Returning Officer’s letter, an FIR has now been registered against Verma.
