Social media giants like Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, among others have finally complied with India’s new IT rules, but Twitter is yet to follow the new regulations, the government sources said.

As per the requirement of the new digital rules, all big social media firms except Twitter have shared details with the IT Ministry. The detailed information includes names of their chief compliance officer, nodal contact persons, and grievance officers.

Highlighting Twitter failing to comply with the rules, the sources said the microblogging site has still not followed the rules. Despite a firm response from the government, to stop beating around the bush and comply with the laws of the land instead of dictating terms to the world’s largest democracy.

Following which, Twitter sent a communication sharing details of a lawyer working in a law firm in India as their nodal contact person and grievance officer. However, the rules require that these designated officers of the significant social media companies must be the employees of the company and resident in India. Meanwhile, it has also not yet sent the details of the chief compliance officer to the ministry, the sources added.

The Indian government laid down new IT rules in February which came into effect on May 26. Under new rules, they directed all major social media platforms operating in the country to appoint compliance officers in India, set up grievance response mechanisms, and take down content within 36 hours of a legal order.

According to the Centre, the new rules are designed to prevent abuse and misuse of platforms, and offer users a robust forum for grievance redressal. The social media platforms, if they fail to comply with rules, would result in losing their intermediary status that provides them immunity from liabilities over any third-party data hosted by them.
