Farmers protest Ghazipur

Farmers, who have been camping at Delhi borders against the Centre’s three farm laws, on Wednesday, clashed with BJP workers when they were carrying out a procession on a flyway. The incident took place at the Ghazipur border between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

The eyewitnesses said that both sides fought with sticks which led to some injuries, whereas pictures and videos circulated online shows some damaged vehicles which were a part of a BJP leader, Amit Valmiki’s convoy.

However, farmers’ organization Bhartiya Kisan Union said the BJP workers raised anti-farmer movement slogans on the pretext of welcoming the BJP leader after gathering in large numbers at the Ghazipur border flyway. They (BJP workers) attacked farmers with sticks when BKU workers objected. Farmers have been injured in the incident, the BKU tweeted in Hindi.

The farmers’ body also alleged that the BJP wants to break the movement by violence and today’s episode is an example of the saffron party’s conspiracy. All farmers are requested to not come under their influence and keep the movement going, the BKU further said.

Meanwhile, Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKU), an umbrella body of 40 farmers’ unions, spokesperson Jagtar Singh Bajwa claimed the BJP workers misbehaved with farmers and themselves damaged their vehicles as part of a conspiracy. This conspiracy of the government is not going to succeed because such tactics to end the farmers’ protest have been used in the past too, Bajwa said.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar termed the incident as undemocratic and condemned it by saying, the word Kisaan is pure and everyone holds them in high regard. Due to a few unfortunate incidents the word has become tarnished. Dignity of sisters and daughters is taken away, murders are happening, roads being blocked.

Reacting to the incident, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said that it was a desperate attempt by BJP to defame the farmers and their movement. The public is now aware of the BJP’s tactics and it won’t get anything by defaming farmers. This is the gruesome face of BJP’s frustration, he tweeted in Hindi.

The government has projected the new laws as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove mandi system and middlemen and allow farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country. However, the protesting farmers argue that the new laws have no mention of minimum support price (MSP) and the mandis that will leave them at the mercy of big corporates.
