Locals in Bihar are struggling to recover from the destruction caused by landslides and floods in the state that have killed 253 people, destroyed standing crops and swept away houses and roads.
As many as 1.26 crore people in 18 districts have been affected by the floods. No new district has been added to the list of flood-hit districts today.
According to Bihar Disaster Management Department release, Araria district witnessed 57 deaths, followed by Sitamarhi (31), West Champaran (29), Katihar (23), East Champaran (19) while Madhubani, Supaul and Madhepura witnessed 13 each. In Kishanganj district 11 deaths were reported, in Darbhanga 10 deaths, Purnea 9, Gopalganj 8, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur and Saharsa registered four deaths each while Khagaria and Saran accounted for three and two deaths respectively.
A total of 28 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams comprising of 1,152 personnel and 118 boats are involved in rescue and relief operations along with 16 teams of the State Disaster Response Force comprising 466 personnel. Army personnel are also assisting in the relief and rescue operations, an official release said.
It further stated that the number of community kitchens has been raised to 2,569 from August 20 which earlier was 1,879. The number of flood-affected people who are being served at these kitchens have also increased from 3.72 lakh to 4.92 lakh.
“The major rivers in Bihar – Koshi, Mahananda, Gandak, Bagmati and Ganga – have breached banks due to excessive rains”, said an official from Bihar Disaster Management Department.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar along with state Water Resources Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Chief Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh and the Chief Minister’s Secretary Atish Chandra conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas of East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur and Patna districts.
“The state government will help people in the flood-hit districts to rebuild their lives. There will be no shortage of funds. The disaster victim has the first right to the government’s funds,” said CM Nitish Kumar.
CM Kumar further directed the officials for intensive air dropping of food packets in Kursakanta, Palasi, Sikti and Jokihaat in Araria and the Sugauli area in East Champaran.
The local MeT office has predicted that Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur and Purnea are likely to witness a cloudy sky with the possibility of rain or thundershower on Tuesday.
In Uttar Pradesh too, the floods caused by heavy monsoon rains has claimed over 60 lives so far. Over 20 lakh people have been hit by the floods in 24 districts of the state. “The toll in the floods has reached 69 in the state, where 2,523 villages in 24 districts are flooded, affecting a population of over 20 lakh,” the relief commissioner’s office said. It said 39,783 persons have taken shelter in relief camps in the affected districts.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
