[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Virali Modi, motivational speaker and disability rights activist on Monday (September 9) alleged that she was “harassed” by a CISF woman constable at the Indira Gandhi International Airport as she was unable to stand up for checking, according to media reports. 

Paralyzed after a spinal cord injury in 2006, the wheelchair-bound US citizen said she was travelling to Mumbai from Delhi when she was subjected to harassment.

Modi tweeted about the incident stating that she was asked to stand-up from her wheelchair by a woman CISF official for security check.

“When I reached the security, one of the CISF women started forcing me to stand up for security checking,” she has mentioned. Her ordeal didn’t stop there. I am unable to walk and stand. I was travelling today (Monday) from IGI Airport, Terminal 3 on SpiceJet Flight (SG8723) to Mumbai.”

Because of her disability, she said, she had surrendered her personal wheelchair to the check-in counter as cargo.

“I had appointed a porter to help me to my seat on the flight. Upon reaching the security check, I had the worst experience with one of your female CISF (personnel). She started forcing me to stand up, even though the porter and I told her multiple times that I could not stand. She refused to do my check.”

Modi said that despite showing her passport which proves that she travels internationally even after being a wheelchair-user, the CISF staffer went on to accuse her of “acting and doing drama”.

“When I confronted her she started yelling at me…”

In her letter, Modi said that she could not get the name of the CISF staffer as she was standing in such a way where her name tag was not clearly visible. “Finally a senior staff member came, did a manual check and let me go.”

 “Is this how the CISF is trained to handle people with disabilities? If so then it’s a shame on our government. I should be treated with respect and sensitivity. This behaviour is absurd and I request you to please look into this matter and take the necessary action so this doesn’t happen to anyone with a disability,” she stated in her letter.  

She also said that a few years ago, she faced a similar incident at the Mumbai airport where the CISF staff insisted she stands up. When she said she could not, one of the women troopers pulled so hard at her leg that she had to be hospitalized.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The petition was filed by a political worker, who had approached the court seeking directions for registration of a case over claims that Gandhi may have held foreign citizenship. The High Court, while hearing the matter, passed directions for further proceedings in accordance with law.

The development comes after a special MP/MLA court in Lucknow had earlier declined to order registration of an FIR, reportedly observing that it lacked jurisdiction in matters concerning citizenship.

Congress leader Pawan Khera suffered another legal setback on Friday after the Supreme Court of India declined to extend protection in a case linked to his remarks about Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife.

A bench of the apex court refused to interfere with an earlier order that had stayed the transit anticipatory bail granted to Khera by the Telangana High Court. This decision leaves the Congress leader open to possible arrest by Assam Police in connection with the case.

During the hearing, Khera’s counsel sought interim protection, but the court declined the request and advised him to approach the appropriate court in Assam for relief. The bench clarified that the Guwahati High Court should decide any bail plea independently and on its merits.

“Am I a terrorist?” remark during hearing

While seeking protection, Khera’s legal team expressed concern over the urgency of the situation. In court, his counsel remarked, “Am I a terrorist?” highlighting the plea for temporary relief until a fresh bail application could be filed.

The Supreme Court also raised concerns over the submission of incorrect documents during the proceedings, adding another layer to the legal complications faced by the Congress leader.

Case linked to remarks on CM’s wife

The case stems from a press conference held earlier this month, where Khera made allegations regarding the citizenship status and financial assets of the Assam Chief Minister’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma.

He had claimed that she possessed multiple passports and owned undisclosed overseas properties. These allegations were strongly denied by the Chief Minister’s family, who termed them fabricated and misleading.

Legal battle intensifies

Earlier, the Telangana High Court had granted Khera temporary transit anticipatory bail, allowing him time to seek relief from a competent court in Assam. However, the Supreme Court stayed that order following a challenge by Assam authorities, escalating the legal battle.

With the latest ruling, Khera is now expected to move the Guwahati High Court for anticipatory bail as the case continues to unfold.
