Governments that had ruled India in the past did not give importance to developing judicial infrastructure as the judiciary was seen as unproductive and ignored it, former Chief Justice of India Justice NV Ramana said on Thursday.
Addressing the inaugural session of the Swadesh Conclave 2024, Justice Ramana said even the ratio of judges when compared to the population is very low.
Despite this handicap, he said constitutional courts have played an important role in the history of India. Justice Ramana said, “The structure of justice is not a shield for those in power.”
He commended the efforts of NALSA in taking legal aid to the people so that justice is made far more accessible.
He said the people of India have immense faith in the judiciary and delivering justice is an important responsibility in this aspect. While adding that justice is intrinsic to Indian culture, he thanked and appreciated all the judges who have worked while honouring their constitutional oath.
Justice Ramana said he was glad that the current justice delivery system is doing its best even with the huge pendency facing it. He said efforts should be made to appoint judges at all forums of justice soon.
Mankind Pharma MD Rajeev Juneja, who spoke after Justice Ramana, said Brand India is being served by the pharma industry by manufacturing medicines.
Calling for more investment especially in research and development, Juneja said India has the skills but lacks investment and research as of now. He noted that if India was to be made a worldwide brand, it would need time and labour restraint.
