Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, considered to be the greatest freedom fighter in the country’s freedom struggle was assassinated on January 30, 1948 by a Hindu fanatic, Nathuram Godse.
On January 30, Godse armed with a Beretta automatic pistol emerged from the crowd, bowed to Gandhi and shot him three times at point-blank range.
It is said that Godse, a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing, Hindu nationalist group considered Gandhi to have been too accommodating to Muslims during the Partition of India.
On February 4 1948, in an official announcement the Union government banned the Hindu nationalist outfit. This move was to root out the forces of hate and violence that are at work in our country and imperil the freedom of the Nation and darken her fair name.
