Gang-raped by three yet unidentified youths last Wednesday in Punjab’s Fazilka district, a 17-year-old girl died of excessive bleeding on Sunday while being taken to a hospital for medical help.
Though the girl, who was a student of class 11 at a government-run school, was raped on October 25, police said her parents – both labourers – had not taken her to a hospital for treatment fearing the social stigma attached to an incident of rape. On Sunday, as the girl’s condition worsened and she began to bleed profusely, her parents decided to take her to a hospital but she reportedly died en route.
The police have sent the victim’s body for a post mortem and are not trying to verify the identity of the accused based on a complaint filed by the girl’s mother and statements registered by some villagers.
According to a report in the Times of India, preliminary investigations in the case have led the police to suspect a classmate of the girl and two of his accomplices as the suspects in the case. “The girl, a student of Class 11, was returning home from school when her class fellow offered her a lift on his bike. They were accompanied by two unidentified youths on another bike. The youths took the girl to a secluded place, where they raped and dumped her. She, however, managed to reach home,” the Times of India report said, quoting sources.
Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) of Jalalabad, Amarjit Singh told mediapersons that the girl’s family had not filed an FIR on the day of the incident and that the victim’s mother filed a police complaint only after the girl’s death. The police, sources said, learnt of the rape from a villager – possibly someone known to the victim’s family.
No arrests have been made so far and a manhunt has been launched to identify and nab the three suspects.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
