A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Greater Noida died after he received a bullet during an incident of celebratory firing on Friday, police said on Saturday.
According to a senior official, the incident happened in Jahangirpur village of Greater Noida when the victim, identified as Prem Pal, was attending a naming ceremony and was shot during celebratory firing at the event.
He said that the accused, identified as Jahangirpur resident Rohit, fired several rounds at the ceremony leading to Prem Pal getting fatally shot, adding the police, upon receiving information about the incident, arrived at the scene but accused had fled.
The official said that a case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), has been registered against the accused and a hunt is underway to nab him, adding the further investigation is underway.
Reports said that the victim, Prem Pal, a resident of Palwal, wash rushed to the Kailash Hospital by some people at the scene. However, after examination, the doctors there declared him dead on arrival.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, Greater Noida, Ashok Kumar said that a naming ceremony was being held at the home of a man identified as Dharmendra in Jahangirpur Kasba, in the Jevar police station area.
He said that the man’s in-laws had come to attend the ceremony from Karol village and the victim, Prem Pal, had also arrived from Palwal for the event.
The senior officer said that the body of the victim has been sent for post-mortem examination and the police have launched searches to arrest the accused, Rohit, who fled the scene after the incident and is still at large.
In a similar incident, in early February this year, a minor boy and a man had died, while another woman and a minor girl were injured, after they sustained bullet wounds during an incident of celebratory firing gone wrong at a pre-wedding ceremony in Alwar district of Rajasthan.
According to the local police, the incident happened when celebratory shots were fired at Lagan-Tika ceremony of Rajveer Singh in Samoochi village under Kherli police station area in Alwar district.
In the firing, 8-year-old Sagar Singh and Dinesh Kanwar, 35, a resident of Salwadi village, were killed, while 30-year-old Hansi Kanwar and 10-year-old Prachi Singh, sustained grievous injuries.
The injured were shifted to a hospital.
Two people, who were guests at the function, were detained and a case registered against them, police said.
