Gurugram: Mob attacked Muslim family with iron rod, hockey sticks for playing cricket on Holi

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On Thursday (March 21), a Muslim family was mercilessly beaten with iron rods, hockey sticks, and their house was pelted with stones by a mob of 40 men in Bhondsi, Gurugram.

The incident was reported on Saturday after a video of the incident went viral on internet.

The police claimed that the brawl was triggered over a game of cricket on Holi but the victim family said it was a planned attack by a group of people backed by a Hindutva outfit.

In the video, a group of armed men is seen thrashing members of a Muslim family inside their house even as one man lies motionless on the ground while another is seen bleeding profusely.

“A case has been registered at Bhondsi police station stating that when children of a local were playing cricket, a few men came there, threatened them not to play cricket there and attacked them with sticks and swords,” said Shamsher Singh, Superintendent of Police (Crime).

Police said the incident took place at around 5pm. One of the victims, Shahid, told the cops that six to seven drunken men had asked his family members not to play cricket on the street outside their house in Bhup Singh Nagar.

When they continued to play cricket, the men were joined by over 40 youths who attacked the family with batons, iron rods, hockey sticks, and water pipes, the cops said.

The family rushed into their home but some members of the mob managed to barge in and beat them. People who stood outside threw stones at the house.

“We were making food for some guests when suddenly, they entered our home. They beat me up with sticks when I tried to stop them. I asked them what has happened. They went upstairs, broke windows and doors and thrashed them brutally,” a woman member of the family told news agency ANI.

Speaking to CNN-News18, one of the victims also appealed to the police to treat the video as evidence to bring the perpetrators to justice. He said that the goons threatened his family to vacate their house in the area and leave, or they would kill them.

The victim said that he is now planning to sell off his belongings and leave because the goons were really ‘powerful’ in the neighbourhood. “There terror was such that even our neighbours refused to give shelter to us. They asked us to leave the locality otherwise they will beat us again and kill us,” the victim told CNN-News18.

The victim family alleged the police took about 40 minutes to come for their rescue, though they kept calling on the helpline number. By then, the attackers had escaped, they said.

“We have registered a case of attempt to murder and other relevant sections against the attackers at Bhondsi Police station. We have arrested six goons and efforts are on to identify others with the help of the video,” ACP Shamsher Singh said.
