Hindi Diwas is observed in India on September 14 every year. The day commemorates the adoption of Hindi in the Devanagari script as one of the official languages of India back in 1949. September 14 was chosen as it was the 50th birthday of Hindi Stalwart Beohar Rajendra Simha.

It was Rajendra Simha, whose initiative led to the adoption of Hindi as India’s official language from a total of 22 scheduled languages of the nation. The main idea behind Hindi Diwas is to make people aware of India’s official language and encourage them to adopt Hindi instead of English.

Apart from Rajendra Simha, social reformer Kaka Kalelkar, Hindi ace poet Maithili Sharan Gupt, Hindi novelist Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, and independence activist Seth Govind Das promoted the language across the country.

For those who don’t know, Bihar replaced Urdu and became the first Indian state to declare Hindi as its official language in 1881.

On the occasion of Hindi Diwas 2021, here are 5 classic Hindi writers of all time:

Harivansh Rai Bachchan

When it comes to Hindi literature, Harivansh Rai Bachchan is considered one of the important faces of the literary movement that gained momentum in the beginning of the 20th century. He is the father of Bollywood’s megastar Amitabh Bachchan.
