India and US inch closer to trade deal mirroring Indonesia pact, says Trump

US President Donald Trump said India is negotiating a trade deal similar to the recent US-Indonesia pact, aiming for greater US access into Indian markets amid tariff threats.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday hinted that India is negotiating a trade deal with the United States similar to the recent agreement Washington struck with Indonesia. The comment comes amid fast-moving negotiations between Indian and American trade representatives as they race to conclude a deal before Trump’s self-imposed August 1 deadline — beyond which countries risk being hit with steep tariffs.

Trump pushes for greater access to Indian market

While speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump stated, “India basically is working along that same line,” referring to the Indonesia agreement. Under the deal with Jakarta, the US imposes a 19% tariff on imports but levies no tariffs on American exports. Trump emphasized that such frameworks are being used to gain reciprocal access to previously restricted markets. “We’re going to have access into India,” he said.

Though it remains unclear whether the India deal will exactly replicate the terms of the Indonesia agreement — particularly the asymmetric tariff structure — the negotiations signal a strong US intent to balance trade relationships. Any attempt to replicate the 19% import tariff structure on Indian exports, while allowing US goods tariff-free entry into India, could be challenging for New Delhi.

Tariff threats loom large over trade talks

Trump has already sent out warnings to several countries, including India and members of the European Union, threatening punitive tariffs of up to 35% if deals are not finalized before the August 1 deadline. The pressure tactics echo the broader Trump administration strategy of leveraging trade tariffs to push foreign governments into concessions.

India caught in crossfire of US-Russia energy tensions

Trump also spoke on global geopolitical developments, particularly the Ukraine-Russia conflict, indicating that Russian President Vladimir Putin could potentially agree to a peace deal within 50 days. This, Trump argued, would shield countries like India from facing a 100% punitive tariff on imports of Russian energy — a secondary sanction aimed at squeezing Moscow financially.

Trump has warned that nations continuing energy trade with Russia could face steep tariffs as part of broader actions targeting Moscow. He claimed that such penalties are necessary to reduce financial flows into Russia and compel it to agree to a ceasefire in its war with Ukraine.

Rare minerals and trade strategy

Commenting on the broader strategic rationale behind the trade negotiations, Trump highlighted the importance of access to key resources. He noted that Indonesia offers high-quality copper and rare earth minerals, which the US needs. He suggested similar strategic priorities could underpin the evolving trade arrangements with India.

Meanwhile, Republican Senate leader John Thune is reportedly holding off on a bill proposing a 500% tariff on Russian energy importers — a move Trump seemed to downplay by noting he can implement sanctions through executive action.

Delhi High Court issues notice to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi in National Herald case

Delhi High Court has sought responses from Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on the ED’s plea challenging a trial court order in the National Herald case.

The Delhi High Court has sought responses from Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on a petition filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the National Herald case. The petition challenges a trial court order that refused to take cognisance of the agency’s prosecution complaint.

Justice Ravinder Dudeja issued notices to the Gandhis and other accused on the main petition, as well as on the ED’s application seeking a stay on the trial court’s December 16 order. The high court has listed the matter for further hearing on March 12, 2026.

The trial court had ruled that taking cognisance of the ED’s complaint was “impermissible in law” because the investigation was not based on a registered First Information Report (FIR). It observed that the prosecution complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was not maintainable in the absence of an FIR for a scheduled offence.

According to the order, the ED’s probe originated from a private complaint rather than an FIR. The court further noted that since cognisance was declined on a legal question, it was not necessary to examine the merits of the allegations at that stage.

The trial court also referred to the complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and the summoning order issued in 2014, stating that despite these developments, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not register an FIR in relation to the alleged scheduled offence.

The ED has accused Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, late Congress leaders Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes, Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda, and a private company, Young Indian, of conspiracy and money laundering. The agency has alleged that properties worth around Rs 2,000 crore belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), which publishes the National Herald newspaper, were acquired through Young Indian.

The agency further claimed that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi held a majority 76 per cent shareholding in Young Indian, which allegedly took over AJL’s assets in exchange for a Rs 90 crore loan.
