In the continuing crackdown against terror in the Kashmir, the armed forces on Tuesday neutralized two Jaish-e-Mohammad militants in an encounter in the Batmurran village in Shopian district. However, one civilian, identified as Beauty Jan, also lost her life.

Reportedly, gunfight broke out in the wee hours of Tuesday between armed force personnel and the militants after the Indian Army and the Police – following a tip off about the presence of three militants – launched a joint operation at Batmurran village close to Kellar in Shopian district of South Kashmir. The exchange of fire – which continued throughout the night – claimed the life of the civilian, who was hit by a bullet near the site of the encounter. The victim succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital.

According to local sources, protests broke out in the area and reportedly infuriated protestors tried to get near the encounter site to provide free passage to the militants.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, South Kashmir, SP Pani said, “Of the two killed terrorists one is a foreign terrorist and the other a local of Jaish militant outfit.” Confirming the death of the civilian, he said, “We request people not to come out as the area is still not cleared.”

Earlier on December 11, another woman was killed while armed forces in the valley killed three other militants in an encounter at Unisoo village in Handwara sector of North Kashmir.

“With today’s killing of a civilian in Batmurran, Shopian the number of civilians killed in Kashmir in 2017 has reached 60. This after the 100+ killed in 2016. For all the claims and rhetoric of reconciliation, this is a stark, sad reality,” tweeted National Conference spokesman, Junaid Azim Mattu.

Earlier in September, Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, Abu Ismail was killed by security forces in Aribagh area of Nowgam. The 26-year old Pakistani national, who is a key player behind the Amarnath Yatra attack, had infiltrated into India about two years ago. Reportedly, Ismail was recently put in charge of LeT’s terror operations in the Kashmir valley.

In another major encounter in recent days, two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists have been gunned down at Khudwani in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. Reportedly, following an intense gunfight which broke out early on 4th September, armed forces have also arrested an over ground worker (OGW) belonging to the same terrorist outfit.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

India stresses mutual respect in ties with Italy after Congress’ Meloni remark

India stressed mutual respect and understanding in its ties with Italy after Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, made remarks involving Giorgia Meloni.

India underlined the importance of maintaining mutual respect and understanding in its relationship with Italy, a day after Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of foreign policy.

The Ministry of External Affairs said India and Italy share strong bilateral ties and expressed its commitment to further strengthening the relationship.

“We share deep and strong ties with Italy, and we are committed to further strengthening this relationship,” the MEA said. It added that friendship and bilateral relations between countries should be maintained within a framework of mutual respect and understanding.

The statement came after a political controversy over remarks made at a Congress event in Delhi.

Rahul Gandhi’s mock hug draws BJP criticism

At the Congress event, Rahul Gandhi greeted party leader Sandeep Dikshit with a mock hug. Gandhi had earlier criticised the Prime Minister’s approach to diplomacy, suggesting that it was being reduced to symbolic gestures such as hugging foreign leaders.

Dikshit then brought Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni into the exchange with a remark, following which Rahul Gandhi played along.

The episode drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who accused the Congress leader of using inappropriate language against the Prime Minister and lowering the dignity associated with the office of the Leader of Opposition.

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi questioned Rahul Gandhi’s conduct and said India required mature leadership. He also criticised remarks in which Gandhi had referred to the government as “jokers and clowns”.

BJP leaders target Rahul Gandhi

Union Minister Giriraj Singh also attacked Rahul Gandhi, describing him as “mentally frustrated” and questioning his conduct.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said Rahul Gandhi’s language was inconsistent with the dignity expected from the Leader of Opposition.

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla also criticised the Congress leader, saying that while disagreement with Prime Minister Modi was legitimate, bringing a foreign woman leader into what he described as a crude joke was neither appropriate nor statesmanlike.

The MEA’s statement, meanwhile, focused on India’s bilateral relationship with Italy and reiterated that mutual respect and understanding remain important to maintaining ties between the two countries.
