IPL 2021 moments: From Kohli’s 10,000 runs in T20 to Harshal Patel’s hat-trick, here’s what we know

IPL 2022 Mega-auction

It’s been a week since the UAE leg of IPL resumed after a COVID-19 hiatus of six and a half months with a clash of the titans, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, the two most successful franchises in IPL history. Chennai Super Kings handed over a comfortable win of 20 runs over defending champion Mumbai Indians.

From CSK’s win over MI to Harshal Patel’s hat-trick, we’ll discuss the 5  best moments of the first week of the UAE leg of IPL 2021.

1. Winless Mumbai in danger of missing play-offs

Since the resumption of IPL 2021 in the UAE, Mumbai Indians have lost three consecutive matches and the chances to qualify for play-offs are very thin. After ten matches MI are 7th on points table with the second worst net-run-rate. Rohit Sharma has been their best player with the bat, the main concern is the out of form middle order of Ishan kishan and SuryaKumar Yadav. Last season both of them smashed 516 and 480 runs, respectively, while this season Ishan has barely passed 100 runs in 8 matches and Surya is averaging 18.90 after 10 matches. With DC and CSK already qualified, the chances for MI are very slim, as MI will need to win all their remaining 4 matches in the league.

2. Punjab choking in death

The third game in Dubai witnessed one of the most spectacular chokes in IPL history when the Punjab Kings failed to score 10 runs from the final 15 balls with eight wickets in hand to beat the Rajasthan Royals who posted a score of 185 after batting first. Kartik Tyagi emerged as a hero for Rajasthan, who defended four runs in final over, dismissing both Nicholas Pooran (32) and Deepak Hooda (0). However, Punjab won their next match against SRH.

3. Rohit Sharma’s 1000 runs against KKR

In total 29 matches played between KKR and Mumbai, the latter has been dominant over the years with 22 wins and only 7 losses against KKR. However MI lost the match against KKR, but MI skipper Rohit became the only IPL batsman to smash 1000 runs against a single team in IPL. He also smashed 100 fours against KKR, which is most by any batsman against any IPL team.

4. 10,000 T20 runs for Virat Kohli

RCB captain Virat Kohli en route to scoring a fifty against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. Kohli became the first Indian and fifth player overall to complete 10,000 T20 runs. He joins Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Shoaib Malik and David Warner in the elite list.
