India on Tuesday slammed the United Nations’ human rights commissioner’s comments on Kashmir as “unwarranted and factually inaccurate”, asserting that the UN rights’ chief’s office has no role in a country’s internal affairs.

Permanent Representative of India to the UN in Geneva Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey in a statement at the General Debate on the Oral Update by High Commissioner during the 52nd Session of Human Rights Council pointed out that since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, there’s has been “unprecedented progress” in Jammu and Kashmir, adding that the BJP government’s monumental decision helped take democracy to the grassroots, enhancing people’s participation in political processes, providing good governance and security to the people and accelerating all round socio-economic development in the erstwhile state.

In his statement, Pandey voiced New Delhi’s regret over the High Commissioner’s “unwarranted and factually inaccurate” portrayal of the human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Pandey asserted that the matters pertaining to the Union Territory are India’s internal affairs and there’s no role for the OHCHR.

Earlier, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk in his global update to the UN Human Rights Council, said that he had recently discussed the “worrying human rights” situation in Kashmir valley with both India and Pakistan, adding that he will continue to explore how his office can assist in improving the said situation by meaningful access to the region.

Turk asserted that progress on human rights, and justice for the past, will be key to advancing security and development.

The UN Human Rights Commissioner also provided updates on human rights situations in different parts of the world, including the persecution of minority Tibetans, Uyghurs and other groups in China. He noted that that the UN Human Rights office has documented grave concerns of large-scale arbitrary detentions and ongoing family separations – and has made important recommendations that require concrete follow-up.

Turk said his office has opened channels of communication with a range of actors to follow up on a variety of human rights issues, including the protection of minorities in China.
