Kejriwal accuses BJP of manipulating voter lists, says Operation Lotus active in Delhi

“Your signatures will be on those files for years. Avoid any wrongdoing, as it will not go unnoticed,” he cautioned.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal slammed the BJP on Sunday, alleging that the party is manipulating voter lists in the national capital through a scheme he termed “Operation Lotus.” Kejriwal claimed that this initiative has been in effect since December 15, aiming to sway the upcoming state assembly elections.

During a press conference on December 29, Kejriwal stated, “The BJP has already accepted its defeat in Delhi. They lack a chief ministerial face, a vision, and credible candidates. To secure victory at any cost, they are resorting to dishonest tactics like altering the voter list.”

He provided specific examples from his New Delhi Assembly constituency, where he noted that applications to delete 5,000 voters and add 7,500 voters have been filed in the last 15 days, affecting approximately 12% of the votes in the area. Furthermore, Kejriwal mentioned that in Shahdara, the BJP had attempted to delete 11,800 votes until the Election Commission of India (ECI) intervened to halt the process.

Kejriwal continued by referencing a summary revision conducted by the ECI on October 29, which added around 100,000 voters to the New Delhi constituency. He claimed that the BJP’s allegations regarding irregularities among 12% of these newly registered voters cast doubt on the ECI’s credibility.

The AAP also highlighted that the BJP filed an application to remove the vote of AAP MP Sanjay Singh’s wife, whose family resides in the same constituency. Additionally, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi accused the BJP of employing various strategies to rig the elections.

The AAP chief urged Election Registration Officers (EROs) to carefully scrutinize any voter deletions exceeding 2% and additions above 4%, reminding them to adhere to legal protocols and resist political pressure. “Your signatures will be on those files for years. Avoid any wrongdoing, as it will not go unnoticed,” he cautioned.

These statements by Kejriwal followed accusations from Atishi regarding BJP leaders bribing voters in the New Delhi constituency. She specifically accused BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma of distributing money at his official residence to sway voter opinions. AAP MP Sanjay Singh further questioned, “Why did Sandeep Dixit not file a complaint against Parvesh Verma? He is openly distributing money while complaints against AAP are being filed. This indicates that Sandeep Dixit is running a campaign funded by the BJP.”

Voting for the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections began on Wednesday, with early reports of technical glitches in electronic voting machines (EVMs) and isolated incidents of tension in some areas.

Polling is being held across multiple constituencies in parts of the state, with voters arriving at booths from the early hours. However, initial disruptions were reported at several locations, mainly due to malfunctioning EVMs.

Election officials responded to the complaints and worked to replace or repair faulty machines, ensuring that voting resumed with minimal delay. Authorities said most of the technical issues were resolved within a short time.

Alongside the glitches, there were reports of sporadic clashes and allegations of intimidation from certain districts, contributing to a tense atmosphere during the early phase of polling.

The political exchange also intensified, with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee alleging that central agencies were attempting to influence the electoral process. She claimed that party workers were being harassed and raised concerns over the conduct of the polls.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, on the other hand, accused the ruling party of law and order failures and alleged that its workers faced disruptions in certain areas.

Despite the early issues, polling continued under tight security arrangements, with additional forces deployed at sensitive booths. Election authorities said they were closely monitoring the situation to ensure that voting proceeds smoothly.

This phase is considered significant in the overall election process, with key constituencies witnessing closely watched contests.
