Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde has tendered his resignation following the arrest of his close aide Walmik Karad in connection with the murder of Massajog village sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. Munde, who was responsible for the food and civil supplies portfolio, resigned on the directive of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The resignation was officially accepted by CM Fadnavis and forwarded to Governor CP Radhakrishnan. Sources indicate that the decision was made after Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar met with Fadnavis to assess the political impact of a chargesheet filed in the murder case, which pointed towards Karad’s involvement.
Political ramifications and Munde’s journey
At 49 years old, Dhananjay Munde is a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics. He is an MLA from Parli in Beed district and belongs to Ajit Pawar’s faction of the NCP. A nephew of late BJP leader Gopinath Munde, he is also related to Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde.
Munde’s political career began with the NCP in 2013. He later sided with Ajit Pawar when the party split in 2023. His previous roles include Leader of the Opposition in the legislative council and a minister in Uddhav Thackeray’s government.
Sarpanch’s murder that led to the minister’s resignation
The murder case that has brought political upheaval involves Santosh Deshmukh, a 45-year-old sarpanch from Beed’s Massajog village. Investigations revealed that he was abducted, tortured, and murdered on December 9, 2024, after he attempted to stop an extortion attempt against an energy company.
The Crime Investigation Department (CID) filed a 1,200-page chargesheet in a district court on February 27, 2025. Three separate cases have been registered in relation to the crime, including:
- Sarpanch’s murder
- Attempted extortion from Avaada energy company
- Assault on the company’s security guard
Authorities have invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against eight accused individuals. Out of them, seven have been arrested, while one remains on the run. The arrest of Walmik Karad, a close associate of Dhananjay Munde, increased pressure on the government, eventually leading to the minister’s resignation.
The case has sparked significant political turmoil in Maharashtra, raising concerns over the nexus between politicians and criminal activities. As the investigation unfolds, more details regarding the extent of Karad’s involvement are expected to surface.
