Mahatma Gandhi had no law degree, claims Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha | WATCH

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha on Thursday courted controversy with his remarks on Mahatma Gandhi, claiming that the Father of the Nation did not have a degree in law or any other subject.

Speaking at a function in Gwalior’s ITM University to mark the Martyr’s Day which falls on March 23, Sinha claimed that Mahatma Gandhi—who worked as a barrister during the apartheid era in South Africa—did not have a degree in law but merely a high school diploma.

Sinha claimed that Gandhi qualified to practice law but did not have a law degree from any university.

The Jammu and Kashmir LG claimed that even though the father of the nation overcame insurmountable odds during his lifetime, some educated people have a “misconception” that he possessed a law degree which is not true and while some people may counter his arguments, he was only speaking facts.

Defending his claims, Sinha asked that not having a degree does not mean that Mahatma Gandhi wasn’t well educated as a University degree is a prerequisite for being educated.

A video of the Lieutenant Governor’s outrageous claims is going viral on social media and has sparked outrage among users with some terming Sinha’s claims as “blatant lies” aimed to defame the nation’s father.

Others have pointed out the fact that a Law degree is mandatory for practicing law and as such Sinha’s claims are purely fabricated having no basis in reality.

Telangana Industries Minister and BRS working president KT Rama Rao took potshots at the BJP over Sinha’s remarks, wondering if the saffron party will next campaign for awarding a Nobel Prize for Nathuram Godse—the man who shot and killed Mahatma Gandhi.

In another jibe at the BJP, he tweeted: “WhatsApp University graduates after all,”.

During recent years, questions have been asked over the education and degrees of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Smriti Irani.

According to Mkgandhi.org, Mahatma Gandhi successfully completed his law degree from University College London (UCL) in three years.

Maharashtra election: Constitution for PM Modi is blank as he never read it, says Rahul Gandhi

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi felt the red book of the Constitution which the Congress leader carries was blank as he never read it.  He was addressing a rally in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar.

Rahul Gandhi stated that the Constitution contains the soul of India and the principles envisaged by national icons like Birsa Munda, Dr B R Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. He claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that the Constitution which he shows in public meetings is empty because the Prime Minister has never read it.

Mentioning that BJP often says that he shows the red coloured Constitution, Rahul Gandhi said that the colour doesn’t matter to them, but what is written inside it. He added that they are ready to sacrifice their lives to protect it. He echoed that Congress wants adivasis, Dalits and backward classes to get representation in decision-making.

Reportedly, several BJP leaders in their campaign for the November 20 Maharashtra assembly election, have sought to link the red book displayed by Gandhi to urban Naxalism. Referring to the same, the Leader of Opposition alleged that PM Modi and the BJP were insulting the national icons by making such comments. He also charged that the BJP and RSS insult tribals by referring to them as vanvasi instead of adivasi.

He stressed that Adivasis are the first owners of the country and have the first right on water, forest and land. However, the BJP wants adivasis to remain in the jungle without any rights, he claimed.

Emphasizing on the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) manifesto, the Congress leader said women, farmers and youth will be protected with provisions like Rs 3,000 monthly assistance and free bus travel, farm loan waiver up to Rs 3 lakh and Rs 4,000 per month assistance for unemployed youth.

Additionally, he also stressed on the demand for a caste census, underlining that it will help to ascertain the number of adivasis, Dalits and backward classes in Maharashtra and how much is their share in resources. He claimed that at present out of the eight per cent tribal population, their share in decision-making is only one per cent.

The Maharashtra Assembly Elections will be held on November 20. The counting of votes will take place on November 23.

Delhi Pollution: Environment Minister Gopal Rai says Grap 3 measures will not be imposed in national capital

People in Delhi woke up to severe category air quality for a second day, with low wind speed contributing to a thick fog layer across the national capital. Nonetheless, the third phase of the Graded Response Action (GRAP 3) will not be imposed for now.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that for the last two days, for the first time this season, the Air Quality Index has gone above 400 in Delhi. Explaining the reason behind severe category air quality after poor and very poor AQI since October 14, the Environment Minister said that meteorologists have reported that due to snowfall in the mountains, a drop in the temperature of Delhi has been recorded. Owing to this, dry conditions have been created in the morning and evening in the entirety of North India, he said.

Meanwhile, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) mentioned that the national capital’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was measured at 428 at 9 am, placing it in the severe category. Among Delhi’s 39 monitoring stations, 32 recorded AQI levels over 400, including Anand Vihar, IGI Airport, Mandir Marg, and Patparganj. Reportedly, this marks the national capital’s worst air quality reading of the season and the highest in the country, with a 24-hour AQI of 418 on Wednesday, an increase from 334 the day prior.

Clarifying why GRAP 3 will not be implemented, Gopal Rai noted that there is a possibility of improvement in the pollution level from tomorrow, therefore they are again giving instructions that the rules made under Grap 2 should be followed on the ground so that GRAP 3 does not have to be implemented. The Environment Minister also ensured that if the pollution again goes into the severe category then the government will take all the necessary steps and will work together with the people of Delhi.

The rioters also pelted stones at the officers and set several vehicles on fire. As tensions in the area remain high, Ajmer Range IG Om Prakash confirmed that nearly 60 people have been arrested so far.

The unrest left a trail of destruction in the village. Reports said, around 24 large vehicles and 48 motorcycles were put on fire, with significant damage to multiple homes.
