The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), a major tribal body in Manipur, declined any dialogue with Chief Minister N Biren Singh or his government on Monday. The tribal body has been demanding imposition of President’s rule in Manipur.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum’s spokesperson Ginza Vualzong stated that the Chief Minister’s intention of reaching out to the stakeholders after a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah comes too late after the loss of so many innocent lives and properties and several other untold hardships faced by the Kuki-Zo tribals. Ginza Vualzong remarked that there is no point in talking about peace without a political solution.

The spokesperson further added that they have reached a point where the Kuki-Zo community can no longer live together with the Meiteis. He claimed that the Chief Minister is the perpetrator of the current ethnic violence whose hatred for the Kuki-Zo community resulted in the genocide of the Kuki-Zo community and that cannot be the harbinger of peace.

The tribal body along with 10 tribal MLA, has been urging for a separate administration for the tribals. A statement issued by the body read that all the tribals and a large section of the Meitei community have lost faith in his leadership and his government. Earlier, the ITLF has chaired talks with various other dignitaries including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where the Kuki-Zo tribals have voiced their demands including their political aspiration of total separation from the northeastern state.

The statement added that the tribal body’s political demand is in sync with the demand of the other 10 MLAs and other CSO groups. It noted that the ITLF has exhausted their avenues for dialogue and it is crucial for the Government of India to focus on finding a solution to their political demand as soon as possible in an effort to bring lasting peace in the state.

The ITLF has also urged all CSOs and tribe leaders from the Kuki-Zo community to maintain unity and not to participate in any form of dialogue with the Chief Minister and his administration. The body further warned that if anyone is known to be in contact with the state government, stringent measures would be taken as necessary.

INDIA Bloc on Thursday accused the union government of trying to create communal divide over a report that claimed there has been a decrease in the share of the Hindu population between 1950 and 2015. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and CPI General Secretary D Raja slammed Modi government for not conducting the census, and called the working paper by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) as an attempt to get votes by creating a communal divide.

Union Minister and BJP leader Giriraj Singh used the report to target the Congress, and said there has been a decrease in the Hindu population due to its politics of appeasement. When RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav was asked about the report he accused BJP of spreading hatred.

The census that was supposed to take place in 2020-21 has not been carried out till now. Yadav said the aim of the BJP government is trying to mislead the people of the country, and are spreading communal hatred. Yadav further pointed out that this is the only agenda of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP government at the centre. He accused the Modi government of fooling people of the country for the past 10 years, and they want to do that again.

Raja questioned the timing of the report and asked why has the prime minister’s economic advisory council come out with this report at a time when the country is undergoing Lok Sabha elections?  He said PM Modi is already trying to polarise people in the name of Muslims and is talking about handing over keys of the Ram Temple to Muslims. He asked why is PM Modi taking up all these issues? Raja further added that this means there is an attempt to polarise people by bringing out such data and said the people should be cautious of such reports.
