Miss Universe 2021: Meet Saisha Shinde, first trans designer behind Harnaaz Sandhu's winning gown

India has got its third Miss Universe after 21 years. Harnaaz Sandhu has won the 70th edition of the Miss Universe pageant. She grabbed the town after beating Miss Paraguay and Miss South Africa.

For the grand finale, Harnaaz wore a beautiful gown crafted by transwoman designer Saisha Shinde. Of course, the Chandigarh based actor and model looked lovely in her dress.

The gown she wore was admired by everybody, and photos from the moment she was crowned went viral on social media. Harnaaz attended the event in a beige gown with silver embellishments. The translucent body-hugging gown had a deep V-neckline and a long flowing train. The beaded outfit had short sleeves.

She topped her look with stone-studded drop earrings. Harnaaz went for a dewy foundation, pink blush cheeks, neutral lipstick, and strong eye makeup.

Do you know whose outfit did Miss Universe wear?

The pageant winner, 21, donned a gown made by Saisha Shinde, a fashion designer who came out as transgender earlier this year. Shinde expressed her enthusiasm on Instagram, a popular social media platform. We did it, she said on Instagram after learning of Harnaaz’s victory. She also posted a photo of the newly crowned Miss Universe wearing the outfit.

Who is Saisha Shinde?

Swapnil Shinde, the designer of Harnaaz’s gown, came out as a transwoman in January of this year, introducing herself as Saisha Shinde on Instagram. Saisha’s designs have been worn by several Bollywood celebrities, including Kareena Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, and Anushka Sharma. She is also known for her work on outfits in films such as Fashion.

The designer on her Instagram handle also wrote that she was in her early 20s at NIFT where she found the courage to accept her truth; she truly bloomed. She further adds that she spent the next few years believing that she was attracted to men because she was gay, but it was only 6 years ago that she finally accepted herself, and now she is coming out to the world. I’m not a gay man. I am a Transwoman, the designer had written on social media at the time.

Shinde’s transition was made easier by the fact that she designed this gown. She’d stated, Miss India is held to a higher standard while competing in an international competition. She must look attractive and lovely, and the dresses must appear delicate and dainty while still being strong and forceful, which, incidentally, my brand has become now that I have transitioned into a woman.

Harnaaz Sandhu won the Miss Universe title after Lara Dutta in 2000 and Sushmita Sen in 1994. The beauty queen was raised in Punjab and is recently pursuing her masters in Public Administration.
