ASEAN-India Summit 2023: PM Narendra Modi says ASEAN will play important role in India’s Indo-Pacific initiative
PM Narendra Modi expressed that it is an honour for him to co-chair the ASEAN-India summit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Indonesia on Thursday morning to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-India summit. Speaking at the summit, PM Narendra Modi expressed that it is an honour for him to co-chair the ASEAN-India summit.
In his address, Narendra Modi noted ASEAN as the centre point of India’s Act East Policy. He added that the region will play an important role in India’s Indo-Pacific initiative. He underlined that the history and geography unite India and ASEAN together with its shared values, regional integration and shared belief in peace, prosperity. He further hailed that the INdia-Indonesia partnership is entering its fourth decade.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi also pointed out that this year’s theme is ASEAM Matters: Epicentrum of Growth. Explaining about the theme, he mentioned that ASEAN matters because everyone’s voice is heard and that ASEAN is epicentrum of growth because ASEAN plays a pivotal role in global growth.
Following the ASEAN summit, Narendra Modi will attend the East Asia Summit. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the Prime Minister noted that he will be attending the 18th East Asia Summit adding that the forum provides a useful opportunity to deliberate on issues of importance to the region including food and energy security, environment, health, and digital transformation. He further expressed that he looks forward to exchanging views with other EAS Leaders on practical cooperation measures to collectively address these global challenges.
Earlier on early Thursday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand welcome upon his arrival in Jakarta. The members of the Indian diaspora welcomed him after he landed in the Indonesian capital.The Prime Minister is visiting Jakarta at the invitation of the Indonesian President, Joko Widodo.
PM Narendra Modi will return to Delhi on Thursday night ahead of the G20 Summit which is being hosted in the national capital on September 9 and 10.

Watch: Shiv Sena MP Hemant Patil makes hospital dean clean toilet as 24 people die in 24 hours
Patil is part of the Eknath Sinde faction of the Shiv Sena. Talking to the media he said he felt painfull on seeing the situation at the government hospital.
The Shiv Sena MP made the acting dean Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital to clean dirty urinals and toilets. 31 patients have died in 48 hours at the hospital. A video is circulating on social media which shows Patil giving a broom to Dr Shyam Wakode. He asked him to clean the washroom.
He was heard saying in the video that the hospital washroom did not have simple mugs and the hospital dean shouted at people who did not use the toilet. Patil asked Dr Shyam did he behave in the same manner in his house also? Patil is part of the Eknath Sinde faction of the Shiv Sena. Talking to the media he said he felt painfull on seeing the situation at the government hospital.
He said the toilets are not cleaned for months. The toilets in the wards of the hospital are locked. He added no water was available in the toilets. Patil’s behavior has been criticized by the Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors. They demanded an unconditional apology from the MP.
The Association said the hospital dean was forced to clean toilets in broad daylight. They said the act was carried out in the presence of the media to make the issue political. They added the subordinates of the college administration and the doctors are left with despair and hopelessness that even after giving their best efforts in treating the patients with lack of resources. The Shiv Sena MP has made a scapegoat of the failure of the hospital administration in providing quality health care.
The Doctor’s association further highlighted the reason behind the recent deaths at the government hospital was due to lack of life saving medicines, resources, medical staff and medical faculty. An FIR has been filed against the Shiv Sena MP Hemant Patil after he made the acting dean of Nanded hospital to clean a toilet.

Sikkim: 23 Army personnel missing after flash floods destroy roads and bridges
After the cloud burst in Singtam, a flash flood alert was issued throughout Sikkim. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, assessed the flood-like situation.
A swift flood in the Teesta river in Sikkim’s Lachen Valley on Wednesday morning resulted in at least 23 Army personnel went missing. Defence officials revealed that some Army vehicles were swept away in the flash flood. A search effort has been started.
As the flash flood that have been caused by an eruption from a glacier lake, which destryoyed the Army trucks that were parked at Bardang near Singtam. In North Sikkim’s Chungthang, the water level climbed upstream to a height of up to 15-20 feet, wiping away a number of dwellings and infrastructure. The flash flood wiped away a part of NH-10 in Melli that connects Sikkim with West Bengal.

The GLOF reportedly took place in Lhonak Lake. A significant volume of water flowed into Teesta along with heavy rain. The flood scenario in the state is probably going to get worse because Sikkim is currently on red alert with a heavy rainfall warning.
Due to intense monsoon rains, the North Sikkim district suffered a disastrous flash flood earlier in June of this year. The Pegong area saw unusual severe floods, which caused the closure of NH10 and severely harmed the highway’s infrastructure, making it dangerous for any vehicular traffic. Areas like Lachen and Lachung were blocked off from the rest of the state as a result of the adjacent rivers overflowing as a result of the heavy rainfall.
Around 2,400 tourists were left stranded in the area by the rapid flooding, and the Army was called in to conduct rescue operations.

Liquor policy case: ED raids AAP MP Sanjay Singh’s Delhi’s residence
The Delhi government’s 2021 liquor policy, which was later abandoned, was the subject of the excise policy litigation.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh’s home is being searched in connection with a money laundering investigation involving the Delhi liquor policy issue. Early in the morning, Enforcement Directorate (ED) agents arrived at the Rajya Sabha MP’s Delhi residence.
After Manish Sisodia, a former deputy chief minister in the AAP government in Delhi, was detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in February, Singh is the most recent AAP leader to be under investigation by the federal agencies in the liquor policy case.
The Delhi government’s 2021 liquor policy, which was later abandoned, was the subject of the excise policy litigation. In the same case in April, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was also questioned for over nine hours.
One of the case’s approvers, the businessman Dinesh Arora, alleged that Singh had introduced him to Sisodia, the excise minister at the time.
However, despite the ED having filed three chargesheets in the case, he was never included as an accuser. Although he was mentioned in the chargesheets, he was neither summoned nor did his testimony in this matter be recorded.
The CBI claims that the excise policy, which would have generated a 12% profit for the companies, was drafted with the involvement of the alcohol industry. According to the FBI, a spirits lobby it called the South Group received bribes in exchange for it. According to the organisation, of the anticipated 12% profit, 6% was transferred through middlemen to public employees.
The alleged laundering of the kickbacks is being looked examined by the ED.
