PM Modi says Gita Press is a temple for crores of people, not just a printing press

Equating the century-old Gita Press to a temple for crores of people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing an event in Gorakhpur Friday, said that the institution was a living faith to which even Mahatma Gandhi was emotionally attached to.

In its centenary year, Gita Press, a landmark publishing house established in Gorakhpur in 1923, was unanimously selected for the Gandhi Peace Prize for 2021 by a jury headed by Modi. The Gandhi Peace Prize, instituted by the Centre in 1995 — the year of Gandhi’s 125th birth anniversary — is a tribute to the ideals espoused by the Mahatma.

Upon his arrival in Gorakhpur today to attend the closing ceremony of the centenary celebrations of the publishing house, and flag off Vande Bharat trains, he was welcomed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandiben Patel. Following his speech, he flagged off the Gorakhpur-Lucknow and Jodhpur-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express trains in the evening. He also launched the Gorakhpur railway station redevelopment project worth Rs 498-crore.

Uttar Pradesh Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday targeted the Congress saying the party was not able to accept the decision to confer Gandhi Peace Prize on the Gita Press, Gorakhpur, and so the party’s leaders were expressing disappointment over the issue.

. CM Yogi Adiyanath said award to Gita Press is like honouring 100 crore Hindus.Yogi slammed the Congress party for questioning the honour conferred to the Gita Press. He used the occasion to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Centre’s decision to confer Gandhi Peace Prize on Gita Press. The CM said the Gita Press has been a centre for publication of religious literature for nearly 100 years.

Yogi said the Gita Press has been doing so without any government help. He urged the people to work for conservation of India’s heritage. The CM also spoke about the work carried out for the uplift of the tribal people and said they had been responsible for conservation of forests.

Karnataka govt decides to withdraw general consent to CBI to probe cases in state amid MUDA row

He said there is concern being expressed “day-in-and-day-out” that CBI is misused in several cases.

Amid a row over the MUDA scam, the Karnataka government on Thursday decided to withdraw its general consent given to CBI to investigate cases in the state.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil, after a meeting of Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, said that the notification granting general consent for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe criminal cases in Karnataka state, under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, has been withdrawn.

According to section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946, the Central Bureau of Investigation needs consent from the respective state governments to conduct investigations in their jurisdiction.

Speaking to PTI, Patil said that the decision was taken because it was clear that the CBI or the central government while using their instrumentalities have not been using them judiciously. “So, case-by-case we will verify and give (consent for CBI probe), general consent has been withdrawn,” he added.

Asked whether this was being done to shield the Chief Minister who is facing a probe in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment case, Patil said, “On CM there is a court order for Lakayukta probe, so there is no such question.”

He said there is concern being expressed “day-in-and-day-out” that CBI is misused in several cases.

Even in the cases that the state government had given to CBI or the agency had taken up, in several of them chargesheets were not filed, Patil said. “They (CBI) refused to file chargesheets, they refused to probe umpteen number of mining cases.”

On being asked whether the government has done this keeping in mind the demand for CBI probe into Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribe Development Corporation fund misappropriation case by the BJP, the Minister said: “It has nothing to do with it as the matter is in court, the court will decide.”
