PM Modi speech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday addressed the Lok Sabha on the ongoing Middle East conflict and its impact on India, warning that the global situation may remain difficult for a long time and urging all governments and political parties to remain united.

Drawing a comparison with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prime Minister said crises often lead to the rise of black marketing, hoarding, and rumours, and authorities must stay alert to prevent such activities. He advised state governments to ensure strict monitoring and take swift action against those trying to take advantage of the situation.

The Prime Minister said India had faced major global challenges earlier as well and had overcome them through unity and preparedness during the coronavirus pandemic. He stressed the need for continued vigilance, especially in areas related to law and order, coastal security, border security, and cyber security, all of which have been put on alert.

Food security, fertiliser subsidy and farmers

Speaking about food security, Mr Modi said the government is working to ensure that farming activities, especially the kharif harvest, continue smoothly despite global disruptions. He said India has adequate food stocks due to the efforts of farmers and the government is focused on ensuring that global crises do not burden them.

Referring to the rise in fertiliser prices after the pandemic and subsequent wars, he said international prices of urea had gone up significantly, but the government continued to provide subsidised fertilisers to Indian farmers. He said the government spent over Rs 12 lakh crore on subsidies to ensure farmers did not face shortages or high prices.

Help for Indians in war-affected region

The Prime Minister said the government is providing all possible assistance to Indian citizens affected by the conflict. He said many people lost their lives and several were injured, and their families are being provided necessary support and medical treatment.

He added that Indian missions in the Middle East are working round the clock and emergency services are operational 24/7 to assist Indians. The Prime Minister also said he had spoken twice with leaders of several West Asian countries, who assured the safety of Indian nationals.

According to the Prime Minister, more than three lakh Indians living and working in the region have already returned to India. He noted that the conflict has created economic, national security and humanitarian challenges for India, especially because the region is important for India’s crude oil and gas supplies and is home to nearly one crore Indians.

He said the government remains alert and is working to minimise hardships for citizens during the ongoing global crisis.

India stresses mutual respect in ties with Italy after Congress’ Meloni remark

India stressed mutual respect and understanding in its ties with Italy after Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, made remarks involving Giorgia Meloni.

India underlined the importance of maintaining mutual respect and understanding in its relationship with Italy, a day after Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of foreign policy.

The Ministry of External Affairs said India and Italy share strong bilateral ties and expressed its commitment to further strengthening the relationship.

“We share deep and strong ties with Italy, and we are committed to further strengthening this relationship,” the MEA said. It added that friendship and bilateral relations between countries should be maintained within a framework of mutual respect and understanding.

The statement came after a political controversy over remarks made at a Congress event in Delhi.

Rahul Gandhi’s mock hug draws BJP criticism

At the Congress event, Rahul Gandhi greeted party leader Sandeep Dikshit with a mock hug. Gandhi had earlier criticised the Prime Minister’s approach to diplomacy, suggesting that it was being reduced to symbolic gestures such as hugging foreign leaders.

Dikshit then brought Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni into the exchange with a remark, following which Rahul Gandhi played along.

The episode drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who accused the Congress leader of using inappropriate language against the Prime Minister and lowering the dignity associated with the office of the Leader of Opposition.

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi questioned Rahul Gandhi’s conduct and said India required mature leadership. He also criticised remarks in which Gandhi had referred to the government as “jokers and clowns”.

BJP leaders target Rahul Gandhi

Union Minister Giriraj Singh also attacked Rahul Gandhi, describing him as “mentally frustrated” and questioning his conduct.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said Rahul Gandhi’s language was inconsistent with the dignity expected from the Leader of Opposition.

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla also criticised the Congress leader, saying that while disagreement with Prime Minister Modi was legitimate, bringing a foreign woman leader into what he described as a crude joke was neither appropriate nor statesmanlike.

The MEA’s statement, meanwhile, focused on India’s bilateral relationship with Italy and reiterated that mutual respect and understanding remain important to maintaining ties between the two countries.
