Congress leader Rahul Gandhi left for Manipur on Thursday to undertake a crucial visit to the violence-hit state. According to reports, in this visit, the Congress leader aims to address the increasing crisis and extend support to the communities affected by spiraling violence.

General Secretary of Congress, KC Venugopal, affirmed that during this visit, the Congress leader will engage with civil society representatives and visit relief camps in Imphal and Chandrachud. Reportedly, this is the first visit of Rahul Gandhi to the violence-hit state since the violence broke out on May 3.

The General Secretary of Congress added that Manipur has been burning for nearly two months and desperately needs a healing touch so that the society can move from conflict to peace. He expressed that this violence is a humanitarian tragedy and it is their responsibility to be a force of love, not hate. During the visit, Rahul Gandhi will also visit various relief camps, where the displaced individuals have sought refuge from the ravages of violence.

As far as reports are concerned, nearly 50,000 people are now staying in more than 300 relief camps across the state since the ethnic strife commenced in May, 2023. Over 100 people have lost their lives in the ethnic violence between the Meitei and the Kuki communities in the northeastern state.

The ethnic violence broke out in the northeastern state on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was conducted in the hill district to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe ST status. The Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of the state’s population and they live mostly in the Imphal Valley. Tribals namely, Nagas and Kukis, constitute another 40 per cent of the population and reside in the hill districts.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the violence-hit state follows after an all party meeting that was held in the national capital last week regarding the situation in Manipur. The opposition parties have demanded for an all-party delegation to the violence-hit state. The opposition also demanded the removal of chief minister N Biren Singh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday attacked the Congress on the issues of Ayodhya Ram Mandir and reservation. He was speaking at an election rally in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar where he said that the Congress is engaged in the conspiracy to eliminate Hindu faith. The Prime Minister took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the remarks of Sam Pitroda and said, Guru of Shehzada has told US that Ram temple construction is against the idea of India.

The Prime Minister also took a dig at the Uddhav Thackeray Shiv Sena faction and called the Uddhav camp duplicate Shiv Sena. He said those from duplicate Shiv Sena are speaking about burying him alive. He asked the people of Nandurbar to have a look at the mindset of Congress. He accused the grand old party for calling the Ram temple as anti-national. He pointed out that the people who organise sarkari iftari, beautify the graves of terrorists for appeasement are calling lord Ram, his temple and his followers, who go to Ram temple, as anti-national, he said.

While addressing the rally in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar, the prime minister said, he wanted to say it with utmost responsibility, be it SC, ST or OBC, vanchit ka jo adhikaar hai, Modi uska chowkidar hai. Jab Modi jaisa chowkidaar ho, kisne apni maa ka doodh piya hai jo aapka hak chheen sakta hai.

Speaking at the rally, PM Modi attacked Congress on the issue of reservation and said that he has asked the grand old party to give in writing that they will not finish the reservation of SC, ST and OBC. He further added that Congress’s silence shows they have a hidden agenda.

PM Modi said that he does not belong to a royal family like the family of the Congress and that he has grown up facing poverty. The prime minister added that for him, serving and helping the tribal community is like serving a member of his own family.

Supreme Court grants interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal till June 1 for election campaigns

Arvind Kejriwal will have to surrender and go back to jail on June 2, the Supreme Court said.

The Supreme Court on Friday granted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal interim bail till June 1. After hearing both parties earlier, a bench consisting of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta issued the order.

In light of the current Lok Sabha election, the interim release was granted, however, the Enforcement Directorate objected, claiming that running for office was not a fundamental right. An interim bail till June 1 means Kejriwal will be out of jail when Delhi votes on May 25. Kejriwal will have to surrender on June 2. He will be in jail on June 4, the counting and the result day.

By evening, the comprehensive order with the terms of the bail will be uploaded, a source close to the development said.

In connection with the now-scrapped excise policy, Kejriwal was detained on March 21 in relation to a money laundering investigation. With the interim bail, he would be released from Tihar jail for more than a month.

However, Kejriwal’s lawyer, Shadan Farasat, said they will be attempting to secure Kejriwal’s release today, the paperwork take time, so Kejriwal might not actually leave Tihar today. Farasat said that the interim bail order does not limit his ability to campaign for the election.

The ED objected to the interim bail for electioneering, claiming that no previous cases existed where a politician had been given given interim bail to conduct campaigning. The Supreme Court reasoned that Kejriwal would not significantly benefit from being granted 21 days of interim bail.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court bench made a suggestion that Kejriwal might be granted interim release so he could run for office. It stated that Kejriwal would not be permitted to carry out any official responsibilities as chief minister if interim bail were granted to him. Kejriwal’s counsel Abhishek Manu, first disagreed but eventually agreed later.
