Top News Live Updates: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi promises to launch NYAY scheme in Goa if party wins poll

Amid rising numbers of Covid-19 infections, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi took a two in one jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying Covid cases are rising but, government is busy with sales. He was referring to the worrisome Covid-19 in the country, slow pace of vaccination and the National Monetisation Pipeline announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier this week.

The former Congress president tweeted that: Rising #COVID numbers are worrying. Vaccination must pick up pace to avoid serious outcomes in the next wave. Please take care of yourselves because government is busy with sales.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Congress leader termed the Centre’s National Monetisation Pipeline as a huge tragedy saying it is an attempt to create monopolies in critical areas that would cut down more job opportunities and adversely affect small and medium businesses.

Earlier, Gandhi had said in a press conference that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will sell the country’s valuable assets made by public money in 70 years to some of his industrialist friends.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday released a four-year National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) worth an estimated Rs 6 lakh crore. The main objective of the scheme is to unlock value in brownfield projects by engaging the private sector, transferring only revenue rights to them and no ownership in the projects, and utilising the generated funds for infrastructure creation across the country.

Fear of a third wave is mounting and experts are repeatedly warning to increase the pace of vaccination as the third wave could affect children more than adults.

According to reports, the BJP legislature party is expected to meet on Friday in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to elect its leader formally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders are likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post following the BJP’s strong performance in the elections. Other names reportedly under consideration include Samik Bhattacharya, Sukanta Majumdar and Swapan Dasgupta.

The political developments come a day after Governor RN Ravi dissolved the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and state cabinet following the completion of the Assembly election process. The dissolution order was issued under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution after outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declined to submit her resignation despite the Trinamool Congress losing power.

The BJP secured a clear majority in the 294-member Assembly, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the state. The election outcome marks a major political shift in West Bengal, where the BJP is set to form a government for the first time.

Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are underway at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground, where senior BJP leaders and party supporters are expected to gather for the event.
