US wants social media details of visa applicants to check history, ideological leanings

US President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order that suspends work visas for all H-1B and H-4 till the end of the current calendar year. The order freezes visas, used by technology workers and their families, as well as L visas for intracompany transfers and most J visas for work- and study-abroad programs, through the end of the year. The issuance of new green cards will also remain halted through the end of the year.

The action will also pause some H2-B visas for seasonal workers, with an exception for those in the food-processing industry, according to a senior administration official who briefed reporters on Monday. Twitter Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. called the order “short-sighted,” saying immigrant tech labor could help the U.S. economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump acted with the U.S. facing an unemployment rate of 13.3% after businesses closed or reduced staff in response to the virus outbreak. The president’s order won’t affect immigrant workers who already hold the visas.

“Under the extraordinary circumstances of the economic contraction resulting from the Covid-19 outbreak, certain nonimmigrant visa programs authorizing such employment pose an unusual threat to the employment of American workers,” Trump said in his order.

Trump said he wants Americans to take jobs that would otherwise go to people granted the visas. Trump tweeted at the height of the coronavirus pandemic that he planned to “temporarily suspend immigration into the U.S.” Industry groups, such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Information Technology Industry Council, wrote to Trump to express concern that restrictions would disrupt business and hamper growth.

The U.S. issued more than 900,000 visas in fiscal year 2019 in the categories Trump plans to freeze. In the past few years, the administration has moved to tighten the H-1B program, and the approval rate for applications has fallen. The technology industry relies on H-1B visas to hire overseas talent, particularly in the fields of science and engineering. Critics say some companies have abused the program to displace American workers.

A second cloudburst in less than a week has caused fresh flooding and landslides in Arunachal Pradesh, leading authorities to issue travel advisories in affected districts.

Cloud burst in Arunanchal

A second cloudburst within a week has triggered widespread flooding and landslides in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, prompting district authorities to issue travel advisories and urge residents to avoid non-essential journeys.

Torrential monsoon rains accompanied by cloudbursts have severely affected the East Siang and Leparada districts, damaging road infrastructure and disrupting connectivity in several areas. According to local authorities, multiple key road links in East Siang district have either been blocked or washed away due to incessant rainfall.

Several road links damaged

The worst damage has been reported on the Pasighat-Runne-Takilalug Road, where sections of the route have been extensively affected. Landslides and overflowing streams have also rendered several other roads unsafe for vehicular movement. Authorities have deployed heavy machinery and emergency teams to clear debris and restore connectivity at the earliest.

Officials have advised people to undertake travel only if absolutely necessary and to remain alert, particularly in landslide-prone stretches. Residents have also been asked to closely follow official weather updates and district advisories.

The latest weather-related disruption comes days after flash floods and landslides caused extensive damage in Keyi Panyor district, where rescue and relief operations are still underway following heavy rainfall earlier this week.

Meteorological forecasts indicate the possibility of continued heavy rainfall across parts of Arunachal Pradesh, raising concerns over further flooding and landslides in vulnerable regions.
