Is UAPA being misused? Tripura govt now imposes UAPA on Journalist Shyam Meera Singh

The Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA)is nothing new to people in India. And, it is to be noted that this act is majorly used to combat terror and it has provisions that make bail impossible if the court feels that the charges that have been imposed are prima facie true.

Tension was filled in the air of Tripura as recently several attacks were reported from India’s north-eastern state. It is reported that more than 10 incidents of religious violence were reported from the North Tripura district in the last week.

Soon after that, several people came forward to condemn the attack and the Tripura government was well let’s say quick enough to impose UAPA on them for sharing social media posts about the recent violence targeting Muslims. Recently, the Tripura government-imposed UAPA on Journalist Shyam Meera Singh.

Shyam Meera Singh on his Twitter shared that the BJP ruled Tripura government has imposed UAPA on him for saying just three words, “Tripura is Burning.”

He further said that he will never hesitate to stand up for justice and adding further to it, Shyam said that the Prime Minister of India might be a coward, but we journalists are not.

Earlier, the Tripura government registered a case against four Supreme Court lawyers under UAPA and various sections of IPC for allegedly promoting communal disharmony as they shared posts on social media about the recent violence targeting Muslims.

It is reported that the notices were served to Amit Srivastav, coordinator, Lawyers for Democracy, PUCL member Mukesh Kumar, Estesham Hashmi, Supreme Court lawyer and NCHRO national secretary Ansar Indori.

However, now the question comes to the play that is UAPA being misused?

The Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA)is nothing new to people in India. And, it is to be noted that this act is majorly used to combat terror and it has provisions that make bail impossible if the court feels that the charges that have been imposed are prima facie true.

Earlier, the office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights, United Nations, also stated that the use of UAPA in India is worrying. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said that the restriction and the right to exercise the freedom of expression and journalists face ever-growing pressure is worrying in India.

PM Modi accuses MVA of corruption, calls them detrimental to Maharashtra’s growth

Launching a scathing attack on the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused them of being the biggest player of corruption and stalling progress in the state.

PM Modi was addressing an election rally in Chimur, a town in the Chandrapur district. The Prime Minister further said that the MVA, a coalition of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Party (NCP), and the Congress is detrimental to Maharashtra’s growth.

He added that the people of Chandrapur have been demanding rail connectivity for years, but Congress and Aghadi did not let that happen. He continued that the rapid development in the state is beyond the reach of Aghadi.

PM Modi further stated that the Opposition have only done a PhD in putting a brake on development works, and Congress is a double PhD in it. He claimed that Aghadi means the biggest players of corruption.

PM Modi also assured the people that the BJP’s poll manifesto will become a Vikas Ki Guarantee (development guarantee) for Maharashtra in the next five years. He said that the NDA government at the Centre along with ruling Mahayuti, means double speed of development.

In the rally, the Prime Minister also slammed the Congress and the Gandhi family, which he claimed has a history of elitism and exclusion. He added that it has always been the mentality of Congress and Gandhi family that it was born to rule the country.

He also alleged that after Independence, Congress had stymied the progress of marginalised communities. He claimed that the grand old party never allowed Dalits, backward classes, and Adivasis to progress.

Referring to an old Congress advertisement from when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister, PM Modi argued that it reflected the party’s anti-reservation attitude.

Maharashtra will vote in a single-phase election on November 20 for the 288-seat Assembly. The counting of votes will take place on November 23.
