Kappan and 3 others were detained at the Mathura toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh while en route to cover up a gang rape and the murder of a Dalit woman in Hathras

Kerala-based journalist Siddique Kappan, who was scheduled to be released on Tuesday after two years in jail in a money laundering case, was granted bail by the Sessions Judge, Lucknow on Wednesday.

Since December 21, 2021, he has been awaiting trial after being charged under the UAPA and later in a PMLA case.

Kappan’s attorney claims that there was a delay in authenticating the two sureties for one lakh rupees that he was required to submit before being granted bail. The sureties could not, however, be submitted in court after being vetted on Tuesday due to the lawyers’ strike.

On December 23, the top court granted Kappan bail. His two one-lakh sureties were unable to be authenticated in a timely manner, according to his attorney Ishan Baghel.

Now that both sureties have been confirmed, they were unable to be presented in court today due to a boycott by district court attorneys. When the court resumes its proceedings, he will be discharged, Baghel said.

The FIR that Lucknow police had lodged earlier this month against two lawyers in an accident case prompted the strike on Tuesday. On October 5, 2020, Kappan and three other people were detained at the Mathura toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh while en route to cover up a gang rape and the murder of a Dalit woman in Hathras town.

The accused, according to the police, were aiming to undermine local law and order and were active members of the Popular Front of India (PFI), a group that has since been outlawed.

Cases under The Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Information Technology (IT) Act were filed against the journalist. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) later arrested him in connection with the PMLA case.

In connection with the Hathras case, the Supreme Court granted Siddique bail in September. But due to ED’s money laundering case, he remained behind bars.

On December 23, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court granted Kappan bail after observing that the ED’s investigation had not specifically linked Kappan to the case involving the alleged illegal transfer of $1.36 million, purportedly obtained by PFI, in order to foment terrorism in the nation.

In the general budget presented on February 1, 2023, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a big relief for taxpayers and has kept income up to 7 lakhs out of tax. Under the new income tax slab, taxpayers will not have to pay any tax on income between 0 to 3 lakh rupees. 5 per cent for Rs 3 to 6 lakh, 10 per cent for Rs 6 to 9 lakh, 15 per cent for Rs 9 lakh to 12 lakh, 20 per cent for Rs 12 to Rs 15 lakh and 30 per cent for income above Rs 15 lakh .
