Uttarakhand: Police arrest five people for allegedly using Cobra to kill businessman

On Tuesday, officers familiar with the matter reported that the police in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, have booked five individuals for allegedly using a cobra to kill a 30-year-old businessman and attempting to pass off the murder as an accident. The authorities have arrested a snake charmer named Ramesh Nath from Uttar Pradesh, while the other four suspects—identified as Mahi alias Dolly Arya, the woman in a relationship with the victim, her friend Deep Kandpal, and two house helps—are currently evading arrest.

The victim, a 30-year-old man named Ankit Chauhan, was discovered dead inside his car with the ignition on, parked by the side of the road near the Teenpani area, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nainital Pankaj Bhatt. On July 15, Chauhan, a trader, was found dead in his vehicle. Following this, the police took custody of his body and sent it for a postmortem examination, which revealed that he died due to snake venom, the SSP added.

Upon analyzing Chauhan’s call details, the police discovered his association with a woman named Mahi. Further investigation led them to track the call records of Mahi, which eventually led to the contact information of Ramesh Nath, a snake charmer based in Uttar Pradesh. After placing his number under surveillance, Nath was arrested on Monday in Uttar Pradesh. During interrogation, he disclosed that the woman, along with her friend Deep Kandpal and two house helps, conspired to kill Chauhan by using a cobra, according to the senior officer.

Initially, the police suspected that Chauhan’s death was an accident, possibly caused by excessive carbon monoxide inside the enclosed vehicle. However, after receiving the postmortem report, the investigation took a different direction. It was determined that the incident occurred on July 14 when Chauhan visited Mahi’s residence, where the other four accused were present. They likely incapacitated him by making him consume alcohol or another substance, rendering him unconscious, and subsequently unleashed the cobra on him, stated the SSP.

Chauhan’s sister, Isha, also filed a complaint with the police, naming Mahi and Deep Kandpal as the suspects. Based on her complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the five accused under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code at Haldwani police station.

India stresses mutual respect in ties with Italy after Congress’ Meloni remark

India stressed mutual respect and understanding in its ties with Italy after Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, made remarks involving Giorgia Meloni.

India underlined the importance of maintaining mutual respect and understanding in its relationship with Italy, a day after Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of foreign policy.

The Ministry of External Affairs said India and Italy share strong bilateral ties and expressed its commitment to further strengthening the relationship.

“We share deep and strong ties with Italy, and we are committed to further strengthening this relationship,” the MEA said. It added that friendship and bilateral relations between countries should be maintained within a framework of mutual respect and understanding.

The statement came after a political controversy over remarks made at a Congress event in Delhi.

Rahul Gandhi’s mock hug draws BJP criticism

At the Congress event, Rahul Gandhi greeted party leader Sandeep Dikshit with a mock hug. Gandhi had earlier criticised the Prime Minister’s approach to diplomacy, suggesting that it was being reduced to symbolic gestures such as hugging foreign leaders.

Dikshit then brought Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni into the exchange with a remark, following which Rahul Gandhi played along.

The episode drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who accused the Congress leader of using inappropriate language against the Prime Minister and lowering the dignity associated with the office of the Leader of Opposition.

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi questioned Rahul Gandhi’s conduct and said India required mature leadership. He also criticised remarks in which Gandhi had referred to the government as “jokers and clowns”.

BJP leaders target Rahul Gandhi

Union Minister Giriraj Singh also attacked Rahul Gandhi, describing him as “mentally frustrated” and questioning his conduct.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said Rahul Gandhi’s language was inconsistent with the dignity expected from the Leader of Opposition.

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla also criticised the Congress leader, saying that while disagreement with Prime Minister Modi was legitimate, bringing a foreign woman leader into what he described as a crude joke was neither appropriate nor statesmanlike.

The MEA’s statement, meanwhile, focused on India’s bilateral relationship with Italy and reiterated that mutual respect and understanding remain important to maintaining ties between the two countries.
